The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1877.

The following Melbourne [items of naw3 are to hand per Claui Hamilton:— The Land Tax Bill has been introduced into the Assembly. It provides for the appointment of three Commissioners to act as a Court of summary jurisdiction, also for the appointment of classifiers. The Hill was read the second time by a large majority.— The Roman Catholics al! over the country are petitioning against the Education Bill.— Owing to the decision of the Supreme Court that the appointments to the Harbor Trust made by the Governor in Council are illegal, the whole proceedings of the Board are invalidated and require a special Act.— There Aras a heavy rainfall at the end of August, but still insufficient. — There has been a fatal bus accident in Melbourne. The springs broke and the horses bolted, and a barmaid named Surah M'Evoy was killed by jumping out.— The rupture in Adelaide between the Governor aud the Council still continues, causing a complete deadlock to legislation— A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Henry Keid, Town Clerk of Warnambool, for embezzling the Building Society's funds. He is believed to have gone home in the Whampoa.— A box of 5000 sovereigns was missing from the mail steamer China at Galle. They were shipped at Sydney last month. A pugilistic encounter between two well-known lady characters enlivened the Port last evening:. The dispute appears to have been about an umbrella, whjch one had taken from the other. The battle was o£ short duration, but was very fierce while it lasted, so much so that it was thought at one time that the Naval Brigade, who were drilljng in close proximity to the scene of action, would have to interfere. To-morrow is the day appointed for the election of uioe City Councillors. There are ten candidates, and there is some little speculation as to which one of the half score is to be the rejected of the ratepayers. The business at the Resident Magistrate's Court thi3 morning was limited to the hearing of a few uuimportant small debt and cattle trespass cases. The usual weekly practice of the Harmonic Society will not be held to-morrow evening. A meeting is called for to-morrow evening by Mr Lightfoot for the purpose of taking into consideration the desirability of forming a Fire Police and Salvage Corps. The need of such a body of men has been frequently proved in Nelson, not so much for tha prevention of thieving, although that has occasionally required checking, as to render assistance to the Brigade by keeping back the crowd who frequently cause much annoyance aud

"iadrance by pressing on the rafia who are ?twork, and sometimes by interfering with £ fae hose. Tbe meeting is to take' place at the Brigade Room at half paafc seven tomorrow ey.eriing, when ail .jyho are willing to join such a corps are requested to attend. It is notified in our advertising columns that the time for receiving tenders for the erection of the new Odd-fellows' Hall has been extended until to-morrow evening, when the Building Committee will meet for the purpose of opening, thetrn .We congratulate the Odd-fellows of Nelson upon their enterprise in this matter, and are glad to learn that their efforts to supply the town with a suitable building, such as has long been wanting, are likely to be successful. px iSquirea, the coroner, proceeded to Motneka Valley this morning for the purpose of holding an enquiry into the fire by which a building belonging to Mr Gee, a settler in the district, was destroyed with all its conteuts. We uuder3tand that there is every reason for believing that the fire was the work of an incendiary, and trust that if it be so the scoundrel may be (foscoTered and punished as he deserves. :
