WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 1. At the monthly meeting held to-day all the members were present. The minutes of last meotiug were read and confirmed, when the Overseer read the following report;— The [slaughter- house bridge requires some repairs, which eau be effeoted without impeding the traffic. Before gravelling the by-road at Stoke it will be necessary to form it in several places. With regard to the purchase of a gravel reserve at Wairoa, the railway authorities have secured the whole from Mr Hill, but in speaking to the manager, he informed ma that if application were made to the Government for a few thousand yards it would be granted. lam not prepared at present .0 state the exact price of a stone crushing machine, but have made enquiries about it. The gravelliag of the Swamp road, Bichmond, I should recommend being done by contract from the river. Mr Gr. Andrews and others have done the portion of tbe road in the Wairoa Gorge, towards which the Board agreed to contribute two-thirds, viz., £21 63. I have again to call your attention to the want of protective works to Appleby Bridge, and to the State of the river al Foxhill, these ought to brook of no further delay. On the Stanley Brook, a distance of six chains from Mr Baigent's mill was quite impassable. I have had it corduroyed, parties interested giving some assistance; it ought to be gravelled. The Stock of bricks that were in store have sow been used, and I should recommend another stock being obtained this summer. The expenditure in the different sub-districts during the past month has been as follows: — Stole?, £14 16s; Waimea East, £21 18s; Spring. Grove, £34 8a 6.1; Wakefield, £36 4s 4d; Waimea West, £21 7s 4d; Dovedale, £16 Bs. Resolved, That a stock of bricks to the amount of £25 be ordered. Also, tbat a footbridge be erected over Pretty Bridge stream, on the road to Quail Valley. *, The committee appointed to inspect the roads, with reference to injury from gorse, having reported aud mide the required certificate, the Secretary whs directed to serve notices on the parties indicated. A letter was reoeived from Dr Kesteven, complaining of the ditch ma^le through bis properly to drain Mr Hill's land, and requesting . assistance in covering it over, alao in making a new approach to his gate.. It was resolved —That the Board will supply pipes at the kiln, the applicant carting and laying them, but that no assistance can be given towards making the approach. Letters were received from A. J. Bichmond, Esq,, M.H.R., in reply to a request from the Board to himself and other members of the Board to advocate the making of a grant for rebuilding the Wairoa bridge, stating that the Government had promised to procure a survey, and report on tho state and requirements of this bridge. He recommended the forwardiDg of a petition on this subject. Resolved — That a petition be prepared, and that the members try to procure the signatures of the ratepayers.^ A circular was received from the Colonial Secretary, enclosing a copy of a resolution of the House of Representatives, requiring returns of the cost of making the valuation of the Road district under the Rating Act of laat year. To tbis a reply had been already forwarded, showing that the cost of valuatioa of tbis district, clerical assistance eupplied by the Board, was £80. This he was directed to do. Application was made by tbe Secretary of the Lower Wukelield School Committee ior permission to take some gravel from the reserve by the Wai-iti, which was grauted. A telegram and letter were received from the Minister for Public works, statins: that a aum of £400, for making the roiid from Pigeon Valley towards Stanlpy Brook, would be paid to the Board's account on receipt of advice that a contract had been let. Resolved — That the road be surveyed as soon aa possible, and tenders be invited. Mr H. Martin, junr., attended to request that sundry repairs should be effected on the road between the Spriog Grove Hotel and the Wairoa Gorge. The Overseer was directed* to have repairs to the amount of £20 done as soon as funds will admit. Resolved — That a rate of ninepence in the pound on the land valuation be levied, and that a rate book be made up by next meeting. Warrants were signed for £287 4s lOd.
