INTERPROVINCIAL.
[PRIiSS AGENCY.] Wellington, Friday. Iq the Vice Admiralty Court to-day, Mr Justice Richmond gave judgment in the suit of Captalu Williams, owner of the hulk Eli Whitney, against the owners of the steamer Taupo, to recover £3.00 damages for the loss of the hulk, which had beeu run down by the Taupo and sunk. His Honor did not regard the collision as an inevitable accideut, as the hulk might have been seen by ordinary eyesight. He held that the hulk was confessedly in fault for haviug no lights, but whatever law or regulations might goveru the case, that fault did not dis-eutitle her to claim contribution from the other party, whose carelessness conduced to the accident. He therefore condemued the Taupo in one-half of the damage, each party to pay its own costs ; it being further understood that the costs of defence as to damage, if oue became necessary, should be borne in like manner unless the Court should hereafter order to the contrary. The Customs revenue for this port for the month of August was £18,858, against £14.452 for the corresponding month of last year. In the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day, the Corporation sued a grocer for having too much kerosene upon his premises; but the Magistrate held that according to the terms of the Act it only applied to oils which gave off au inflammable vapor at 110 degrees Fahrenheit. The Corporation was therefore nonsuited. Ddnedin, Friday. Mrs Burn has to-day written to the Education Board positively declining to hold the position of Lady Principal any longer than to the end of the present session. Miss Burn and four other lady teachers of the High Schools have also resigned. The action referred to has been taken iv consequence of some severe strictures which appeared in the Dunedin papers, disapproving of the conduct of the Education Board, and imputing nepotism to the Girls High School. The teachers have been requested by the Board to retain their positions till a commission of enquiry has been appointed. A petition is in circulation for presentation to the Governor, asking that a petition be appointed to enquire into the proposed alterations of the Board, and that they be prevented from .having any further effect until such is dove. Auckland, Saturday. Mr Grey, of the Customs, has arrived at Russell. He reports that he landed at Kirikiri and the adjacent island and searched thoroughly, but found no trace of wreckage. The fires seeu by Captain Savoy were those of Maoris on Cape Kirikiri.
