lhe last meeting of the present Council was held last night. Present: All the members except Crs iiarley aud Little. Several letters were icceived, including one from Mr Disher, complaining of the drainage from Shelbourne-street passing through his property. ° The report of the" Public Works Committee was read, ft recommended the erection of a lamp at the corner of Bronti and Collingwood streets ; that Mr Campbell be grauted a lease of the water race by which his mill is worked for fourteen years nt an annual rental of sk; and that the road from the Commercial Wharf to the Rocks should bo gravelled. Some discussion took place relative to the proposed lease to Mr Campbell, and it was ultimately deckled that the Mayor and Town Clerk should consult tho Corporation solicitors on the mutter. The other recommendations were adopted. The Mayor reported upon the financial position of the Corporation as follows : -To the credit of the Borough fund there was a balance of £36 9s 9d, in addition to arrears of rates amounting to £280, aU of which with the exception of £20, wouid probably be collected. A six months' rate would be levied on fche Ist of October, so that in future the annual rate might be leviable afc the time provided by the Act. To the No. 1 Gas and Waterworks account there was a credit balance of £1633 13s 9d; this, however, was subject to the payment to the General Government of interest to the amount of about £1000; to the No. 2 account there was a credit balance of £658s lid, being the balauce of money borrowed for extensive purposes, The City Surveyor's report with reference to the proposed work on the north of Bridge- j street stated that some of the residents were l willing to contribute while others wished for time to consider it as there was a discrepancy in the depth of the sections, some of which flid not reach the thoroughfare by 20 feet. _.f_ J?ell f however, had agreed to make liberal concession, g#.d fco convey a right of road 20 feet wide. Some dfeonssjon took place as to the advisability of taking oyer an'unformed road, and ultimately the consideration of. the matter was postponed until the next meeting. The opening of the tenders for the Waimea street improvements was deferred until the next meeting of the Council. '
On the motion of Cr Hooper seconded by Cr. Gray a sum of £30 was unanimously voted to the Mayor to cover his expenses on his late visit to Wellington. On the attention of the Council bein<* called by Cr Waters to the neglect shown in not constructing a culvert in Tasman and Weka streets, it was ordered that that the work be proceeded with immediately. The Mayor stated that it was his intention to resign the office, and, to relieve him of a difficulty, he asked Cr Waters, who, he understood, did not intend to offer himself for re-election as a Councillor, to allow himself to be appointed Mayor for the time being. Cr Waters, much against his own inclination, consented to do as he was asked, and Mr Ererett having handed in his resignation, he was elected Mayor for the remaiuder of the term. The Council 'then adjourned.
