Henry Russell. Attempting to retrace their steps, they find the water has reached to their necks; they are powerless to return to the shore, and are lost in the depths of the ocean. He ia a perfect taniwha, this Henry Russell (a fabulous reptile supposed to frequent deep waters), in his capacity for devouring men. He has a throat like the parata, which we erroneously supposed existed in distant seas, but we find it here in our midst (meaning a fabulous monster said to exist in the depths of the ocean, supposed to cause the ebb and flow of the tides by drawing in and ejecting the water from its stomach alternately) . He is a more obnoxious weed than the Scotchman (i.e. the Scotch thistle), &c. Mr William M' Arthur, M.P., presiding at a demonstration in favor of Sir Wilfred Lawson'a Permissive Bill, at which the jovial fresh water knight himself was present, said: "It was a melancholy fact that notwithstanding the endeavors to improve the moral, social, and material condition of the people, the drinking habits were increasing; for, whereas £100,000,000 used to be spent in a year a-drink, now ic^ad increased to £150,000,000, an amount which' was sufficient to pay off the National Debt in five yeara, aud this money had bean.aipeut in a way which would materially increase pauperism and crime. He expressed himself in favor of giving compensation to the publicans where the houses were abolished.'' In the Turkish Parliament on a recentjdate, a representative from Kurdistan, iv reply to some remarks about the great misery brought about by the present state of things, said :— " You talk of misery, and yet I see brilliant uniforms, luxurious palaces.and many elegant carriages in Constafcinople I Come to our -province if you really want to know what misery, means. I myself, like most of the people in niy province, go about in rags, and it was only by a great effort and sacrifice that I have been able to get this coat to appear decently among you, and still, I am ready to give up this coat and resume my old rags in order to fight for the existence and honor of my country." The news of the cruel slaughter of Christians which reaches us daily is assuredly most heartrending, aud the wholesale butchery of the unfortunate Bulgarians calls for the sympathy of every kindly heart, but so also shou'd every well-wisher sympathise with the sick, suffering, and dying of our own community. How many are the miseries and wretchednesses through a neglect of ourselves wlrch are constantly being witnessed and experienced, and which could have been averted by the timely aid of the Medicinal Art, and if those who have been benefitted by the use of Ghollah's Gkbat Indian Cures would recomnrend them to others who are suffering the tortures aud miseries of j Rheumatism, Rheumatic Gout, Liver Com- ; plaints, Biliousness, Sick Headaches, Gout, &c. m the like manner to testimonials so frequently published by the Proprietor, and one of which is now appended, au amount of ■ kindness and sympathy would bo exerted to influence the poor sufferers to use these Indian Medicines for the restoration of their health, and the saving of many a valuable life for the benefit of mankind generally, but more particularly for the im- , mediate family circle — Testimonial Referred To. • Nelson, 15th August, 1877 The Proprietor of Ghollah'a Great Indian Cures— Dear Sir— Having suffered for six months ' from Rheumatic Gout; I was prevailed on to give your medicine a trial, and after taking three bottles of the Rheumatism Mixture found myse'f completely cured.
