MOTUEKA HIGHWAY BOARD.

The usual mouthly meeting of the Board was held on August 25th. All the members present. After tbe confirmation of the minntes of the previous meeting, the Secretary made the following report: — The price asked for land required for a road along the base of the hills in Pangatotara Valley, shows most conclusively ibat the amount at the disposal of the Board is quite inadequate for the work. I would recommend the Board to fix a price for the laud required, and offer the same to the owners; or that proposals should be made to them to submit the matter to arbitration. I have invited tenders for re-instating the roads destroyed by the flood on Major Paton's Bluff only, Mr O'Brien having informed me that he will offer all the opposition he can to the road being made along his terrace, but at the same time is willing to meet the Board as far as possible, and offers to give a strip of road two chains wide on the bank of the river free of cost, bnt requires to be paid for one fence. He wishes to put the fence one chain back in the first place, and will undertake, ebould tbat width be washed away (of which he thinks there is little probability) to move tbe fence back another chain. I am inclined to concur in his opinion that a road one chain wide on the bank of the river at this place, will last for a number of years. I have inspected tbe land through which a road is required to reach Mr Lloyd's land at Nuatimoti, and other land lately taken up beyond, and find that the only serviceable road to be obtained is by going through Mr G*. Canton's land, and also through the bra of Mr Lloyd's section for about thirty chains, and across a corner of Mr Pinny's, about 4 chains. Mr Lloyd will permit tha road where proposed, on condilion that he be paid £5 for ihe land, and 10s per chain for one fence, and also that he gets ibe impracticable and useless road shown on tbe pl-m of tha district made over to him. I 'have inspected the unmade portion ot the B«ton rout within this district, and estimate the cost of mukiug it passable at about £45. The portion ol the road referred to in Mr P. O'Counoi'sle-.ter (rem! last meeting) is oo tbe baok of the Motueka river, übou. 20 chaius in length, an,! would cost about £15 to make a narrow Cartroad, but is uot likely to be used by anyone but Mr O'Connor himself or persons $_oiog to his land. A portion of the river bank is washed away, an i more is likely to be taken. The broken down bridge ou Prestidgo's cross-road, Moutere, which Messrs Bensemann Bros, offered to repair for £15, could, I think, be doae for about £10, if made in one span, without trouble; but the traffic on this road is very trifling, and tbe present fordway, t-llhousjli on unfenced private property just off tbe line of road, appeared to me to be quite as good as two other lord ways on tho same road. Tbe breach in the Riwaka river baok has been repaired. I lound it necessary to extend the work at each end, to make it complete, and bave also bad Borne willows planted alon^ the bank. The extra coat ainouuta to £3 18s. Bd. A letter was read from Mr Haddow, stating the amount required lor land through tbe Ule Mr lit-uil.'f* farm, aud one from MrJellicoe, stating the amount required ior th<. road pacing through Mrs G-iscoyue's properly. Also a letter trom tbe Ooder-rfccretary for Public Works, lv reply to tbu. Secretary of t&e Board, respecting a road along

the base of the hills, suggesting to the Board whether it would not be wise to postpone the works in Pangatotara Valley, until it is ascertained whether Parliament will sanction a larger amount for making a road out of reach of floods. Resolved — That Messrs Carter, Grooby, and Burrell. together with the Secretary, visit the Pangatotara Vallejr in order to estimate what in their opinion is the value of the private property through which the propsed road at the base of the hill is proposed to pass, and to report at the nest meeting. ■ Resolved —That Mr O'Brien's offer of land for a road through his properly, as stated in the Secretary's report, be acoepted with thanks. Resolved — That the offer of Mr Gr. Canton of lond for a road through his property be accepted, the Secretary to lay off the line of road aod Mr Canton 1 to sign tbe necessary undertaking before aoy money is paid. Also tbat MiLloyd's offer be accepted on condition that those persons having land beyond will contribute one haif the amount required by Mr Lloyd. Resolved— That the Board will contribute £20 towards the completion of the Biton road, on condition that the settlers interested finish the work in accordance with a specification to be prepared by the Board's officer. Resolved—That Mr O'Connor's npplication for the road to be opened to his property cannot be complied witb, as it does not come within the claes of roads, the improvement of which can be deemed beneficial to the district, Mr O'Connor being the only person (so far as lhe Board is aware) who would be benefitted by an expenditure on such road. Resolved — That Messrs Bensemann Bros.' offer to repair the bridge oo Prestidge's cross road be not acoepted, but that the Secretary have a tree put across tbe creek for the accommodation of foot passengers. A letter was read from the Seoretary of the Takaka Road Board respecting the work required to improve the Riwaka-Takaka Track. Resolved — That the Secretary acknowledge the receipt of the letter, and slate that the Board doas not conaider it expendient to begin the work in the centre. Resolved — That the members of the Board for the Sub-District of Riwaka, wait on Messrs M.cmahon, Lewis York, and Reyder, with the view of makiug satisfactory arrangements for a road through their properties, and, in the event of being successful, the road be laid off at once, in order that the necessary work may be begun as soon as possible. A letter was read from M. Thorp, complaining that since a culvert has been put across the road, opposite the Swan Inn, the water runs on his land to the iujury of the same. Resolved — That tlie ditch on the lower side of the road be deepened, in order tbat the water may run down it. Resolved— That the Sscretary take the necessary steps uader the 93r.1 section of the Public Works Act, 1876' to have all trees and hedges trimmed and lowered that may be injuring the roads, and all goree grubbed that may spread on the same. A letter was read from Messrs J. and D. Drumraond, asking for assistance to re-iustate the bridge over the company's ditch, washed away by the recent floods. Resolved— That the consideration of the letter be deferred until some future meeting. ReeoSved— That thia Board recognises the great desirability of draining the' Moutere Valley, ond will do all in its power (o further the work, either by recommending Parliament to grant a sufficent Bum for the purpose, and havioiz p'an3 of the wo k prepared, or by assisting the persons interested, to levy a special rate or raise a loan. R-solved— That the application of Mr Green to put up a fence, with slipbars, across the Blind river, be granted, cou'litionnlly on his slowing a ri«ht-of-way :icio-!8 his in and. Resolved — Tint the Secretary report at next meeting on the amount of work r-quired to re-insiato the road in Dove V.I by.
