Ws are requested to state that a supplementary mail for London via San Erancisco will close at the Post Office at half-past eight o'clock to-morrow morning: John Mebhan, who about a month since was sentenced to imprisonment for stealing certain articles of clothing from the shop of Messrs Wymond & Co., died in gaol last night. An inquest will be held. John Burn, who was released from gaol two days ago, was brought before the Resident Mogistrate this morning charged 'with vagrancy. Prisoner, who stated that he had no money and was suffering from a painful abscess under the arm, was sent to the Hospital. The dance advertised totake place this evening at Mr King's Hall will be held tomorrow night, commencing at half-past seven. The population of the principal towns in New Zealand at the close of the last month was estimated by the Registrar-General as follows : — Dunedin, 23,365; Wellington, 16,130; Christchurch, 12,815 : Auckland, 12,024; Nelson, 5554. *$An ally of nature. All attempts to force nature react injuriously upon the system. Medical treatment, to be successful, should be auxiliary and not compulsory.
