[Per Arawata.] Melbourne, August 13. The M'Artney case is the principal subject m the Assembly. New writs have been issued for South Gippsland. The Government are endeavoring to pass a resolution to relieve M'Artney from his present disability. The ship Macduff has arrived from London with smallbox on board. There are several cases, some serious, including the captain and chief officer. The Lusitania, on her 40 days 4 hours passage from London, averaged 311 £ knots per twenty-four hours. In the action Ireland v. Captain Chapman, R.N., for false imprisonment, a verdict was given for defendant by three-fourths of the ' jury. Au exhibition of merinos will be held in February next. Amongst the prizes are five gold cups. There are eighty-five acceptances for the Melbourne Cup. ( Business continues to improve. A youug man named Scully has died from tho effects of injuries received in a prize fight ou Sunday.
