The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, AUGUST 16, 1877.
i here was a great crowd at the Drill Shed last night, the occasion being a " Social Gathering" to celebrate the rescue of the passengers and crew of the Queen Bee. The storekeepers had liberally provided the materials for the tea, and these were converted by Mr Stevenson into a meal for five hundred, aud that his efiorts were appreciated was shown by the fact that when the five hundred had done their duty to the good things laid .before them, there were not many fragments left The large shed was then cleared of tables and forms were arranged for the ( oncert that was to be given by a baud of vocalists from the bappho. The clearance was effected principally by the men from that ship who also tastefully decorated the walls with flags of many nations, kindly lent by Captain Dishy. In addition to that which "braved a thousand years The battle and the breeze"" there were the flags of Germany, Prance the United Spates, Sweden, Spain, and the Russian man-of-war flag bearing the Sfc ' Andrew's Cross. The entertainment consisted of songs comic and songs 'sentimental recitations, and choruses, in many of the latter of which the audience, moved thereto by the seventy-six Jack Tars from the shin who were sprinkled among the crowd, -joined with much heartiness and rigor The Artil lery Baud afforded an occasional rest to the vocalists by playing at intervals. The pro ceedings terminated with votes of thanks to the promoters of the entertainment, which broke up shortly after ten o'clock, all present having enjoyed a most pleasant evening T»B Customs revenue at the Port of Nelson fop the week ending this day amounted to £781 17s. 2d, It was intended that the Naval Brigade accompanied by the Sappho's men, should attend Church parade to-morrow morning, but as a previous arrangement had been made for the Bishop of Nelson to conduct the service on board the ship in the morning the j4ea was abandoned. A CHiLoajEN's service will be held at All gaints' Chtircfy jto morrow afternoon at three -'"todi, frftef which sp.eo/al pffertories will be eolith f°?t^ Sunday School building fund. , .. , , Trrp nAy T* n -iri.r advertised to make a t- J™ i&KK.'W 4 - """far •* lO o'clock .
A meeting of the Queen Bee Eeliaf Committee waa held this afternoon, when Ithe collectors reported that £305 had been subscribed up to date. This included £5 17a from Spring Grove, £61 17a from Richmond, £5 15s from Wakapuaka, £10 from Mrs Gibbs, one of the Qaeen Bee passengers, and £26 5s from the N. Z. Shipping Company. Ihe balance was collected in the town of Nelson. The meeting had not 'terminated when we went to press. The fancy dress and calico ball to be held m the Provincial Hall ou Tuesday next promises to be well patronised. It is said that there will be several competitors for the prizes offered by the Committee, and that the counterpart of several well-known characters will be represented. Those wellknown musicians Mrs Scaife and Mr Draeger have been engaged for the occasion. The prizes will be on view in Mr Isaac's window 41ns evening. They are most creditable specimens of the photographic art. In the centre is to be seen the Aurora, while on either side are the officers, pilot, and coxswain. The dramatic entertainment by the men of H.M.S. Sappho has been unavoidably postponed from Monday until Tuesday night. A fakeavell tea- to the Good Templars on board the Sappho will be given by their Nelson brethren on Monday evening in the Temperance Hall. The Rev. P. Calder will deliver a lecture at the Presbyterian Church to-morrow evening on " The Cross and the Crescent." The reverend gentleman's known ability as a lecturer is a sufficient guarantee that hia subject will be handled in such a manner as to render it both interesting and instructive. The Star Combination Troupe did not give their entertainment last night on account of the large gathering at the Drill shed. They will, however, appear this evening, when a pleasant entertainment may be looked for. The Church Messenuer for the present month is a double number* and contains, aa is usual at this time, particulars of the election and appointment of Churchwardens and other officers for.the ensuing year, together with the balance sheets from the different parishes; also an account of a three months' tour, by the Bishop of Nelson, through the diocese. These notes of his travels through Nelson, Marlborough, and the West Coast districts will be read with interest. An enabling touic. A medicated stimulant that enables those who use it to resist disease, the influences of exposure, sudden changes of temperature, and to perform an extra amount of intellectual and mechanical labor, may be called an enabling tonic. These enabling properties are possessed in a wonderful degree by that strength creating and health perpetuating allly of Nature, Udolpho Wolfe's Schisdam Aromatic Schnapps.— Advt.
