The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, AUGUST 16, 1877.
We have much pleasure in publishing the followiug telegram which reached us from Neison last night, aud iv congratulating the Naval Brigade upon the ready appreciation of their services displayed by the-Govern-ment:—Mr Richmond asked the Premier iv the House to-day if the Government intended to recognise in aome -substantial manner the services of the Nelson Naval Brigade crew who voluntarily went out in search of those who were missing from the Queen Bee, and succeeded in rescuing the boat containing the women and children. The Premier replied that the Government fully recognised the important services rendered by the Naval Brigade, and would reimburse all the pecuniary loss they had sustained in undertaking the search, and, in addition, would ask the House to vote £50 as a gratuity to the Brigade. A concert in aid of the Queen Bee relief fund was given by the members of . the Harmonic Society last night, which in every way proved most successful. The Hall was crowded in every part with an audience who, to judge from the frequency and enthusiasm of the encores, fully appreciated the efforts of the performers. As the returns are not yet in we are unable to state the exactamounfc realised. The muster in the Drill Shed to-night is likely to prove a large one on the occasion of the tea and concert to be given in commemoration ot the rescue of those who were wrecked in the Queen Bee. Tea will commence at 5-30, after which a concert will be given by the seamen of H.M.S. Sappho. The Artillery Band will play during the evening We learn, from Mr Walker that he has been informed by some Collingwood men who have just returned from Farewell Spit that there is a quantity of wreckage lying there, which appears to have been torn from the bows of a vessel. It consists of a piece of rail 20ft loug, I2in wide, and 4ih thick, of some bright hard wood, either mahogany or teak, with planking attached outside, cut into which are the letters ANTOFAGASTA* also a female figure-head sft high, painted white, with a wreath of roses round the head. Our readers are reminded of the entertainment to be given at the Masonic Hall tonight by the well-known Star Combination Troupe. The Secretary of the Queen Bee Relief Committee has received a letter from Messrs Blundell Brothers, proprietors of the Wellington Evening Post, stating 'that they have already collected £19 12s on behalf of the fund. The monthly meeting of the Fire Brigade is postponed until Monday evening next. The Christ Church choir will meet for practice this evening as usual. While the Sappho ig in port advantage has been taken by Captain Digby of the fine range at the Maitai to send a firing party for practice. Every morning a detachment of Blue Jackets may be aeen wending their way towards the Maitai with their bags containing the day's provisions slung over their shoulders. The man-of-war will remain in harbor until Tuesday or Wednesday next, when she will sail for Wellington. She will be thrown open for inspection to visitors on Sunday afternoon, and the watermen of the Port advertise that they wili convey visitors there and back for one shilling Passengers will have the option of returning by either of the watermen's boats. Should the weather prove fine no doubt a great many will avail themselves of the opportunity of visiting what is rarely aeen in Nelson— a man-of-war. Business cares and overwork are apt to react disadvantageous^ upon mind and body producing lassitude, depression, and loss of flesh. Under such circumstances the system requires to be reimbursed for the excessive wear and tear of brain and physique. The safest, surest and pleasantest compensating agent that can possibly be ased is Udoli-ho Wolfe's Schiedam Aromatic schnapps.— Advt.
