A meeting of the Catholics here was held last night for the purpose of considering the new Education Bill, Bishop Moran presiding There were probably 80J people interested! -feouc resolutions in condemnation of the Bill were submitted and carried almost unanimously there beiug two or three dissentients to the first resolution. The meeting was very enthusiastic. The resolutions are to be fonvarded to the Dunedin members and the members of the Government. Two hundred and fifty thousand shares in the Union Insurance Company have been applied for in Dunedin. „,. Wellington, Friday. Ihe doverument has been iuformed by the Ageut-Geueral that iv consequence of the very stringent instructions he has received as tothe class of emigrants to be sent to New Zealand this year, he might have some difficulty iv making up the specified number of 5,000. The strictest supervision is being exercised to ensure that none but the classes ordered shall be selected, even if this results in making the total number shipped less than 50j0. Great difficulty is experienced iv obtaining single women, aud, as an additional inducement to the free passage, Sir J. Yogel ia offering free passages to the ports of embarkation. Mr Thomas reports produce prices as follows :— Adelaide flour, £24; Colonial* £18 • good feed oats, 4s ; bran, Is per bushel ; wheat, 4s 6d; pollard, 7s 6d; maize, 4s 6d; hams, 9>d bacon, 9d; cheese, 7d; potatoes' £3 15s. ; _. Auckland, Thursday. Tbe applications for Union Insurance shares here amount to about 110,000. The football match, Ota<jo v. Auckland, resulted iv a draw, neither side scoring. There was hardly anything to choose between the teams, and the game was well played throughout. Wanganui, Friday. lhe ketch Pearl sailed this morning for Nelson with 97 sheep, and a diver for the Queen Bee. Timaru, Thursday. At a meeting of the Harbor Board to-day, it was necided to advertise for competitive plans for the breakwater— best plan, a bonus j of .£200; second, £100. It was also decided I to mvite applications for the office of Engineer to the Board.
