The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15, 1877.

The Bridge-street firebell sounded the alarm afc eleven o'clock this morning, and as usual people ran about hither and thither not knowing where to go. In the course of time, however, it transpired that assistance was required in the direction of the Waimea Road, and somewhat later it became known thafc it was Mrs Burnett's house that was on fire. As soon as the alarm was raised, a man named Richardson, in the employ of Mr P. Donald, ran to the rescue aud rendered very valuable assistance, the hose was taken from the Rising Sun, and the neighbors speedily assembled, and shortly after the Brigade arrived on the spot. Ifc appeared thafc a chimney had taken fire, and fche sparks falling on the shingles set; them on fire, aud in a short time' flames were breaking out in various parts of the roof, which in some places was burnt through, the hot cinders falling on the ceilings below, and setting them on fire. Fortunately it was nofc necessary to use the hose, but fche application of several bucketsful of water was sufficient to subdue the flames, which at oue time looked very threatening. The house was insured in the Loudon and Liverpool for £500 We have often before called attention to the necessity for dividiug the town into fire districts, and denoting the locality of a fire by certain strokes of the bell. The necessity for this was never more apparent than this morning, when the hose reels were run out one to Bridge-street and fche other to Hardystreet, where those iv charge remained for a minute or two in a state of doubt as to the direction in which their services were required. Something, too, requires to be done to the machinery by which the bell is supposed to bo rung, as this morning ifc was perfectly useless. Thbrk was a very large attendance at the Baptist Church yesterday evening on the occasion of installing the Rev A. J. Hamilton as pastor. Major Paton presided, and addresses were delivered by the Revs G. S Harper, J. Beckenham, and several others Suitable pieces were sung by the choir, and a very pleasant social meeting was terminated with a prayer and the doxology. Up to three o'clock to-day 14,500 shares in the Union Insurance Comnany had been applied for in Nelson. The Wellington journals are appealing to the residents ot that city for subscriptions for the Queen Bee Relief Fund. " The Manawatu passed the wreck of the Queen Bee afc 4 p.m. on Saturday. She reports that there were several small crafts about her picking up the cargo, which was being thrown overboard by people on board the wreck. .AT a meeting of the Ball Committee of the Naval Brigade held last evening, it was decided to offer two prizes for the best dressed lady aud gentleman who appear in I fancy costume. The prizes will be two I photographs of the Aurora and the crew who manned her on the late expedition, which proved so successful. The photographs have been taken by Mr Isaacs, Trafalgar-street, and specimen copies will be on view on Saturday next. This will no doubt have fche effect; of inducing a great many more to appear in fancy dress than otherwise would be the case had no prizes been offered. '" It will also be an increased attraction fco the gallery, as the decision of the stewards on fche best dresses will be made known in the early part of the evening. : J *.*... . l i

Mr- Madik offered for sale afc auction at. the Port to-day a quantity of goods moreV less damaged ex Queen Bee. The sale attracted a large; number of people, and the prices realised ivere, we understand, very satisfactory. \ ' Be beforehand, with disease. Trifling^tle-. rangements beget serious diseases When you feel "out of sorts," languid and despondent, you may be pretty sure thafc you lack vitality, and that the bodily functions are unperformed, and you will do well to infuse fresh energy into the waning forces of your system. By so doing you will anticipate disease and avoid serious danger. For this end, use Udolpho Wolfe's Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps.— Advt.
