FAIR TIPPLERS.

: {Whitehall Review.') The excessive use of hardly to be tolerated in men, becomes absolutely unbearable in women, no inconsiderable portion of whom permit themselves now a days an appalling indulgence in Btrong drink. For it is an undeniable fact that when the weaker creature yields her finer nerves and more sensitive organization to tbe insidious encroachments of a vice which takes only a short while to break up the strongest constitution, her ruin is more speedy, aud her abasement a thousand times more deplorable than that of her helpmate. -Nobody who sees much of women can be ignorant of the altered state of things — that they diiuk more than they used to do. That they are no louger satisfied with a lump of sugar saturated iv Eau de Gologao, or a tew drops ot volatile spirit in a little waur, already au advance upon tho beverages inada by our great-grandmothers out of mulberries or meadow cowslips. There are now very few youuy n.arried women, aud even-girla iv their saooud aud third seaßou, wtio liuve not habitually recourse 10 liquors containing a proportiou of alcohol to administer a tilliu to iheir jaled verves, aud bn.ee them up afresh for some new tux upon

tbeir energies. Port, sherry, gin and bitters, even mixtures of brandy and champagne are made use of to revive the drooping spirits, and give to the j listless beauty the requisite amount of '■■ "go" which will enable her to hold ! her own in the midst of a crowd of chaffing adorers. And when we consider for a moment the life which women lead in London during several months in the year, the reason of this degeneration in our mothers and sisters is not without its ralson d'etre. Let us follow the movements, for the brief space of twelve hours, of a young girl who goes much into society. Somewhere about nine or ten a.m. she makes her appearance in the morning room— • after having jigged about in a crowded assembly until daybreak — languid, heavy-eyed, uorefreehed by the matutinal tub. Without the ghost of an appetite, she sits down to an unwhole- : some meal of spiced and peppered : dishes, hot rolls, strong . coffee and cream. After breakfast— too tired in all probability to ride — she wiles away the rosy hours until lunch time in doing intricate things with colored silks, writing notes, or fluttering, the pages or the books sent in from Mudie's. Luncheon is a heavier breakfast, with the addition of wine and pastry. A turn or two in the park, lolling back in a barouche, varied by an interval of shopping in a West End " emporium ; M home to afternoon tea, with plenty of sweet cakes to destroy the little appetite created by:the fresh airj unother spell of the dolce far niente, a languid toilette, and then dinner. Tha real business of the day begins long after the birds are asleep and the stars are shining in the sky. A menu, in which you look in vain for plain roast, or boiled; the glare of a score of candles; a wine for every course, laughier, excitement, coffee, flirtation, and finally, the brougham^ in which the flushed and feverish girlis whirled away to more hot rooms, more excitement, more champagne ; what can result from such an unnatural and unhealthy mode of existence but an increased craving for dissipation, and an impatient desire to ba relieved "from the lassitude attending reaction by the abuse of alcoholic stimulants ? The habit, when frequently indulged in, becomes not only ruinous and disorganising to an illimitable degree, but it also eogenders greater evils aa a necessary consequence. Our pleasant vices generally run in couples. The nervous system, periodically overwrought, abandons the role of servant for that of master, aad wita imperious voice m«kes itself heard,, calling .for other and more potent distraction. The moral faculties have by this time become obscured, the border-land between right and ;wrong ceases to be so clearly defined as heretofore, duties and obligations relax their restraining force, and, if there ba any latent hereditary instinct of evil lurking in the otherwise pure nature, that one drop of black blood will be certain to come out into dark relief. The courtly and complacent physician has much to answer for by his tacit acquiescence in a great and growing evil. Nor is the humbler practitioner a whit more open and honest, but invariably shows himself too weak or too interested to run counter to the desires of his women patients, manifestly leaning towards such agreeable remedies for nervous depression aa crusted port and yin mousseux, only waiting for the authority of the doctor to indulge iv them opeuly in the presence of fathers aud husbands. It is difficult, if not impossible, for these gentlemen to tike the bull by the boms. Every man is not gifted with the brutal fraekhess of an Abernetliy. It is a hard tick to make up one's mind to tell a languid lady, who&e maid stands beside her bathing her temples with Hungary water as Bhe reclines upon the boudoir sofa, that the real remedy for the disorder is not to be found in the wine-glass, but, in hylpiug Mary the housemaid to shake tbe beds, and in running up and (ibwu stairs to answer the nursery bell, thereby running the risk- of off-nding au arislocifttic patieut, and jdoparJisin>? the brougham of tbe future. log, it mtidical nren were ieS3 given to order stimulania lor every feminine derungtmeut und were to impress upon womeb itie vitul importance of exercise and thu healthfulueas of (Jriukiug in deep draughts of the puro rnoruing air, there would be inuny more young cheek* blooming without rouge aud many a now uuxious hudbaud going to bis dt'itobers or cuuuiiug-houae with a lighter hear!.
