The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 1877.

Foa some reason known only to the Press j Agency our telegrams of the proceedings in the Assembly last night had not reached us i up to the time of our going to press. j Witu to-morrow's issue of the Evkning ' Mah., and on. the first Saturday of each month in future, will be published a supplement containing seveu columns of articles and paragraphs upon matters pertaining to farming and gardening. Our morning contemporary is anxious to correct a paragraph which appeared in fhe Mail of Wednesday last with regard to the action of the Government in reference to officers commanding volunteer forces in the Middle Island, lest the public should he misled thereby. We stated that circulars were addressed to these officers informing them that tbeir services would not be required after the end of July. That's not true says the 7i*.i£s, they are not told that their service-, will not be required, but only that they are int to receive any salaries after the date named. The distinction is quite clear but we fail to see much difference between the t*w*> statements. One of the new statute holidays, the first Monday in August, will occur next Monday on which day the Banks, and most of die' places of business will be closed. The Bishop of Nelson returned to town by the Murray yesterday, atter a long absence, during which he has visited the distant parts ot the diocese. It is not often that tenders for a considerable amount, and iucluding scores of items approximate so closely as those of Messrs Jackson and Hounsell for supplying the Education Board with books and stationery for the ensuing twelvemonths. Mr Jackson's tender amounted to „548 Is lOd, >d that of Mr Hounsell, the successful tenderer to .£543 lis, the difference between the two being thus only £2 lOs lod. A meeting of the officers of the volunteer corps m the district is called for to-morrow afternoon at three o'clock in the Orderly Room, to « consider the alterations desirable in the Rifle Prize Act." A lecture, which appeared to interest and amuse tho large audience of children who hstened to it with great attention, was delivered at the Temperance Hall last night by Messrs Wilkins and Cowles. The first part related to the early history of the Israelites, and the latter was based upon Bunyaus Pilgrim's Progress, both beiug illustrated by scenes displayed by means

of a powerful lantern. A well-known hymn was then shown on tbe sheet, which the children were asked to sing, an invitation to which they responded with groat heartiness. The juvenile** of Nelson are placed under a greafc obligation fco Messrs Wilkins and Cowles for fcheir interesting aud improving lectures. Two presentations in connection with fche Church of England, have recently been made in Marlborough. Afc Havelock on the 24th of July a largely attended tea party was held on the occasion of offering to Mr and Mrs Whitehorn some recognition of the services rendered by the former as lay reader and by fche latter aa leader of the Church music. Mrs Whitehorn was presented with a handsome tea and coffee service bearing a suitable inscription, and Mr Whitehorn with a purse containing 25 sovereigns and a beautifully bound Bible, on the fly-leaf of which was written:— "Presented to William Whitehorn by his Pelorus friends, in affectionate remembrance of his labors for many yeara as lay reader in the ..district. Havelock. July 24th, 1877. -To him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward. Proverbs XI, 18.'"— At Canvastown Mr and Mrs G. M. York, who had always taken a deep interest in all matters connected wifch fche Church, were, on the occasion of their leaving, fche district, presented with a handsomely bound Bible bearing fche following inscription :— "Presented to Mr and Mra G. M. York hy their Pelorus friends as a mark of affection and respect; on fcheir leaving the district. * The Lord watch between us when we are absent one from another. Genesis XXXI. 49.' " Sir Astley Cooper the renowned British surgeon once said that no man should be aware from hia sensations thafc he has a stomach. Alas I how many thousands are painfully and continually reminded of the existence of that organ. Dyspepsia renders the lives of these unfortunates perfectly miserable. Every manifestation of the disease vanishes, however, when Udolpho Wolfe's Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps is used to strengthen the stomach and associate the orgaus. — Advt.
