EDUCATION BOARD.
The Board . met yesterday. Present : Messrs Barnicoat, Tarrant, Rout, Campbell, Shephard, Leighton, Wastney, Burrell Malcolm, Percy, Holland, Talbot, Catley, Burn, and Condell. The miuutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Two tenders for the supply of books, maps, and stationery for the ensuing twelve months haviug been considered by the Imance Committee, it was resolved that the recommendation of- the committee, "that the lowest tender, that of Mr Hounsell, be accepted," be adopted. It was also resolved that the following recommendations of the Finance Committee be adopted: — . i 1. That a 14 years' lease of section No. 156, Westport, be giveu to Mr Job Line*;, the yearly rental being £4. ;2. That a 14 years' lease of section No. 95, Westport, be given to Mr J. Craig, the yearly rental bomg „3 10s, but that no power to remove buildings be granted. . . j ;3. That Mr Hornby's offer for a lease of sections 52 and 60, Cobden, and Mr Gunn's application for a lease of section No. 59 Cobden, be declined. ' ' .4. That the several tenders of Messrs E Stanley and J. Sim, for a lease of the Baton Reserve, be declined. A second letter from the Dovedale Committee having boen read, requesting the Board to concur in the dismissal of the master of fche Dovedale school, it was resolved, after a division (ayes 9, noes 6), "That '< no sufficient reason having been assigned for ! the dismissal of the Dovedale teacher, the Board decline to concur in the recommendation of the Local Committee." Tho following amendment was lost, on a division (ayes 4, noes 7) " That it is desirable in the interests of education, that the present master of Dovedale school should resign his position before the next meeting of the Board." Messrs Leighton and Campbell obtaiued leave to defer bringing forward, for two mouths, the respective motions staudin-n- in their names. ° The Finance aud Works Committee reported that in the existing uncertainty as to the future income of the Board, they deemed it inexpedient to recommend the adoption of auy plan adding to the educational expenditure of the district, and, therefore, postponed presenting their report till the amount of the fund at the disposal of the Board is ascertainable.

An application for a subsidy to s school at Orwell Creek having been read, it was resolved that the Inspector visit the school in October, and that he be authorised to allow a subsidy if the circumstances of the case appear to him to warrant it. The consideration of a similar application from Hampden, Matakitaki, was deferred for two months, in order that more definite information might be obtained. A letter was read from tbe master of Pangatotara school complaining that a month's salary had been stopped by his committee on account of his having left school without giving tbe stipulated month's notice. It was resolved that tbe Board, having received no* communication on the subject from the Pangatotara Committee could uot interfere. Mr Tarrant was requested to report to the Board as to what, in his opinion, would- be tbe best course to pursue with regard to the Pangatotara school, The Secretary was also instructed to request tbe Pangatotara Committee to take no steps towards appointing a new teacher until after the next meeting of the Board. Resolved, That the Secretary give an estimate of the addition to the present expenditure that would be required by tbe establishment of a High School at Motueka, and that he communicate with the Motueka Committee, with the view of ascertaining what, if any, special funds would be available in such school. Resolved, That in cases where vacancies in schools occur unexpectedly, tbe luspeotor be authorised to sanction temporary appointments at rates of salary previously authorised and subject to confirmation at the next meeting of tbe Board. Resolved, That the Board confirm the temporary appoint of Miss Falls as Mistress of the Westporrt Girl's School until September Bth, at a salary nf £120 per annum. The Inspector was instructed to make arrangements for the filling up of examination papers at Westport ander proper supervision by candidates for the mistresship of the Westport Giri's School. Mr Slatter having applied to have the Motueka Reserve, leased by him, surveyed, the Secretary was instructed to take steps to have the boundary pegs pointed out. Resolved, That a Committee of the whole Board meet on Wednesday, August Bth, at 10 a.m., with the view of discussing the provisions of the new- Education Bill, 'and communicating with the members of both Houses of Assembly and the Minister of Justio tbereou. Mr Fairhall gave notice that he would move that the Lower Wakefield Committee be authorised to engage a mistress at a salary of £72 per annum. Bank balance on August Ist, £440 2s 2d. - * -— »
