This plan has been tried successfully in the Opawa Riv.r, Marlborough. Wellington Wednesday. At the Municipal Conference to-day, the following notices of motion were given:— By Mr Steward—" That the Chairman be requested to procure for the use of the Conference sufficient copies of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1876," and "The Charitable Institutions Bill, 1877." By Mr Standish— "That the Chairman write requesting the Government to be good enough to inform the Conference upon what basis of calculation the. pro rata deductions for the maintenanceof charitabl. institutions and hospitals out of the subsidies payable to Municipal. Corporations have been made or are intended to-be made for the future, and whether the subsidies payable to County Couacilaand Road Boards have been and will be liable to the some deductions." By Mr Thomson— 4 ' That in the opinion of this Conferencethe number of resident householders in any district proposed to be formed into a borough should be reduced from 160 (as proposed by the Municipal Corporations Act, 1876) to 100." By Mr Steward— " 1. That'it be recommended that provisions be made for dispensing with the necessity of reference to his Excellency the Governor in the matter of the and transfer of municipal leases. 2. That steps be taken to vest direct in Municipalities the municipal reserves now held under Crown grants to Superintendents, and which now vest in trust in his Excellency the Governor. 3. That this Conference take into consideration the advisab .lity of asking that legislative provision be made to exempt receipts given by Municipalities from stamp duty." This was the only business of .importance. Auckland, Wednesday. The Zealandia arrived from Sydney and left again for Honolulu, at 215 p.m., with the 'Frisco mail. She takes 12 passengers from New Zealand and 52 from Sydney. Christchurch, Thursday. At a meeting of journeymen bootmakers last night it was resolved to form a trades union to resist a reduction of wages.
