The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, JULY 31, 1877.

The election of a City Councillor is to take place tQ-mprrow. We have taken no part in the contest, because in a .public capacity we know nothing of either of the candidates, and we are not disposed to Bupport or oppose' either the one or the other on purely personal grounds. Mr Little, it is true, has issued an address which, in respect of meaning nothing, bears a marked resemblance to the Governor's speech in opening Parliament. Mr Bethwaite appears to be of opinion that silence is golden, as he has hitherto held his peace. The electors are thus invited to make their, choice between . two men, of whose views they are in entire ignorance, and if events should prove that they had alected the candidate more worthy of/their support, will have to congratulate themselves upon , having made.a lucky shot. The polling will commence at 9 a.m., and close at 6 p.m. A "Beach Comber "writing with reference to « Voter's » lattar in last night'a Mail says that in the event of a ratepayer being asked by a candidate for hia support he would ba perfectly justified in promising it, getting into the cab that was sent to convey him to the. polling place, and. when there voting as he : thought proper regardless oi previous promises. There is a high tone of morality about this advice, that will probably recom, mendit to.the ratepayers to-morrow. '■' ' H.M. corvette Sappho got up steam this morning, and proceeded to the outer anchorage, where she will stay until to-morrow morning, when she makes a start for Wellington. On board of the man-of-war is a steam lifeboat, which was used for the first time in Nelson waters this afternoon, when it towed one of the boats from the ship to the shore at a fair rate of speed. The lifeboat was built at Sydney by the carpenter and his men, and is said to be able to steam at the rate of nine knots per hour. There was a large attendance at the Temperance meeting- held at the* Congregational Church last night, and a very pleasant evening was spent, addresses of considerable interest aud ability being delivered by Tesidedts iu the place .and visitors from the Sappho, and pleasantly varieu by the singing of hymns and sacred songs. Mr Best, of H.M.S. Sappho, referred to the manner in which the temperance cause was spreading in the navy, stating that in no less than thirty-seven ships there were now Good Templar lodges, four of these being on the Australian station. He desired to return thanks for the warm welcome accorded to the Sappho Good Templars by their brethren in Nelson. Messrs Dunn, Gibson, and Jones wished to thank the member* of the Light of the Ocean Lodge for the entertainments they had given in Nelson. The proceedings terminated with a vote of thanks to the chairman, the Rev. J. Beckeaham. The' total Customs receipts at. the Port of Nelson for the month ending 31st July, 1877, were £2782 6s Id. The following were the separate items, omitting shillings andjpence: —Spirits, £768; cigars, £24; tobacco, £319: Wines, £67; tea, £123; coffee, &c, £16; sugar, £283; goods by weight, £61; gooda 10 per cent ad. val., £403; other duties, £116; total duties, £2185; other receipts, £596. The rules relating to post-cards have been so far relaxed as to admit of a duty stamp being affixed when used as a receipt. This will no doubt cause them to come into generel use for that purpose, and will prove a great convenience to tradespeople. A woNDEßPDi. restorative. As a stomachic, as a toiric nnd cordial £or tne aged uud languid; as as remedy for the nervous weakness and annoying uterine complaints to which women are especially subject; as a protective in ail climates, torrid, temperate, and frigid; and as a specific for every ailment which saps the bodily strength and breaks down the animal spirits, Udol puo Wolfe's Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps stands at the head of remedies of its class.
