CITY COUNCIL ELECTION.

To the Editor of thb 'Evening Mail.' Sir,— To-morrow the electors of the City of Nelson will be called upon to elect a Councillor in place of Mr Harley, whose cause of resignation must, be fresh in the memory of every one. 1 would advise my fellow electors to be more careful this time how they exercise their privilege, for fear they may fall into the same error as they have before. There are only two candidates offering, and, as " Voter" said last night, one ol.them "savors too much of the ring." He has issued an address, in which he promises every thing, and says : « I have no selfish motives, nor have I any private interests to serve." Those who know him will know that, if he is elected, he will be the tool of a Councillor who is now having a large sum of money expended iu a part of Halifax-street, which, is scarcely ever used by any one but himself, while there are so many parts of the town mucli more in want of repairs and improvement. I would ask the electors to look well to the qualifications and habits of the two men, and see which would be the most likely to serve them best, and which has the most at stake, for iu my opiuion a Councillor should have some qualification besides that of beiug ou the roll. Mr Bethwaite may not be known to many, particularly in the suburbs of the city, but those who do know him, know him to be au honest and industrious man, possessed of good common sense and abilities, and such a man is most likely to serve. us faithfully. He is not a man that will go about begging for votes liketheother candidate and his friends (the ring). Witli these f«w remarks I leave the ratepayers to judge for themselves which of the two is the most likely to serve their interests. I am, &c, . An Elector. To the Ed_tor op the 'Evening Mail.' v-S^ST 1 Bhoald like t0 a^ "Another Voter or any other man whether the energetic individual who canvasses for himself privately or in the public house bar over a glass of beer has not some other motive besides that of remedying that great want of public spirit that he (Another Voter) speaks of He must acknowledge the fact that our City Council has some as good men as can be produced, who have no selfish motive in view, and most of us doubt whether it would be improved by any more beer influence. We are tired of it. I am, &c, A VoTBB. To the Editor of the « Evening Mail.' Sir— To-morrow will be the election day for one Councillor, and we have two candiwJnil n US '- Z l^* 36 m en, I trust, will be well weighed m the balance by the ratepayers before giving their vote. As regards which is the best there can be onlv one opinion to sensible men earnestly de siring the welfare of the town aud integrity ofc the Council, and that gentleman who has visited most of the electors with vain promises asking for their vote and interest, destroying the purity and secrecy of the ballot, cannotjbe the man, I think/in whom the majority will pl acG their trust. But the man who will go in upon his merits, quietly doing honestly, without party influence, his

duty towards his^onseituehtg>mugt certainly , be their choice/and hd'doubt tie state of the ! poll to-morrow night will show ..that Sleepy^ Hollow has been wise in itsichoice for once, j : and that my vote has not been given in > vain.-— I am, &c, ■ \. s \ T, ' -"- x -<-.*_ .
