The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY JULY 30, 1877.
There was divine service on board H.M.S. Sappho yesterday morning. The members , of the Naval Brigade, to the number of forty, proceeded across to the man-of-war in the Aurora, and met with a hearty reception from the crew. The service was conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon Thorpe, who took for his text the words " Watch and Pray." From those words the Ven. Archdeacon preached a very appropriate sermon, which was listened to with great attention by tho3e on board. After service the Jack Tars
showed the Volunteers round fcha ship, and explained the working of the different gons to them. The crew of the man-of-war ware piped to dinner at twelve o'clock, at which hour tha crew of the Aurora took their leave after having spent a very pleasant morning! In the afternoon the vessel was visited l)y hundreds of people, and at one time there could not have been less than one thousand on board. The watermen reaped quite a golden harvest, and have not had such a haul for a long time past. The Sappho will steam to the outer anchorage to-morrow at midday where she wilt remain until Wednesday morning, when she sails for Wellington. A Lodge of Instruction of the Southern Star Lodge will be held this evening at halfpast seven. Wb understand that the concert advertised to be given by Madame Moller to-morrow evening has been unavoidably postponed until Wednesday. ! A Temperance meeeing, at which the Rev. J. Beckenham will take the chair, will be held in the Congregational Church this evening. There will be a choral service at which Sankey's hymns will be used. Several of the Sappho's crew are expected to be present and to take part in the proceedings. On Friday last a match was fired between the members of the Normanby Hussars and the Naval Brigade, and resulted in a victory for the former by 44 points The Blue Jackets proceeded to Wakefleld in a fourhorse conveyance, and were met at the forest Inn by the members of the Cavalry who gave them a cordial reception. A capital spread was provided by the country team, and nfter it had been done f nil justice to, both teams set out for the scene of action. Several of the Navals took part in tho ball m the evamng, which was a great success. iss on the alert if you bars symptoms announcing the approach of kidney or bladder disorders.
