The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, JULY 26, 1877. PORT EXTENSION OF THE RAILWAY.
From the following telegram, which we received this morning from Mr Richmond, it will be seen that there is at last "a probability of this work being. undertaken • — "The Minister of Public Works, in reply to Mr, Sharp's .question with reference to the delay in constructing the railway to the Port said that the delay was principally caused by the municipal authorities wishing to widen the Port road, which caused the railway to be carried further, out than was originally intended, thereby increasing the cost The Government wpuld ask the House to vote the necessary amount, and the work would then be proceeded with." A coach and four will leave Twist and Gay s stables to-morrow morning, convey W ; the Naval Brigade shooting team to Wakefield. There are a few vacant seats which j may be bespoken. Tickets for the ball to : take place in the evening, may be obtained j from. Mr E. N. Jones. . i TWe have to acknowledge the receipt from : the Government printer of a batch of Par- : liathentary papers. : Wb understand that Messrs N. Edwards < and Co. have disposed of the Avondale run in Marlborougb consisting of 60,000 acres one-third of which is freehold, and 15,000 sheep, to Mr Charles Teschemaker for . £23,000. Greenwood has resigned the position of Sergeant-at-Arms in the House of Representatives. For years he ha 3 held the appointment to the satisfaction of himself and of the House, and ha will carry many good wishes with him into his retirement. jAlajor Paul, an old resident and well-known icitizen of Wellington, succeeds Dr. G_ ii- eeiWOOd.—Post. wow* i
