At the Chamber of Commerce meeting yesterday, a report from the Committee condemning several portions of the uew railway tariff was adopted, and a deputation was appointed to wait on the Minister- of Public Works with certain recommendations. The Christchurch Medical School has been formally incorporated with the Canterbury College. The conference of municipal representatives at Wellington will be held about the first of August. - •-• Ddnedin, Tuesday. Mr. Bradshaw received applications for 5000 shares in the new Insurance Company to^lay. Greymouth, Wednesday. G. W. Moss and Co renort the Greymouth share market remarkably brisk, large parcels having changed hands, especially of Anderson's Extended and the Just in Time. Grahamstown, Wednesday. A; crowded meeticg was held last night to consider the advisability of petitioning Parliament to abolish the gold duty, A resolution was proposed that the gold duty be abolished as a tax' unjust in principle, exceptional in operation, and injurious to the mining interests. An amendment was proposed to the effect that the gold duty be not abolished, but that the miners' rights fee be reduced to five shiliiugs. The question was discussed for two hours and a half, at the end of which time tbe amendment was carried by a largs majority. AU the speakers agreed that the abolition of the duty under the present exceptional circumstances in which this district is placed would be disastrous. Auckland, Tuesday. Messrs Barnett and Levy, proprietors of the Theatre Royal, bave called a meeting of their creditors. Liabilities, £20,811 ; assets, £23,583. The theatre block, which cost £14,000, is credited at £12,500. The Bank is credited with precipitating a commercial crisis. The Rotoroa has arrived from Sydney. The ship Great Broughton has arrived from London, after a passage of ninety-three days. She brings several passengers, all well. The log records many beats over 300 miles.
