The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, JULY 18, 1877.

There were t\yo assault cases set down for heanng ie the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning, namely, Elizabeth Powell v. Jbmily Powell, and Josiah Buttress v. H. J. J_. Augarde. Both, however, were tinavoidably postponed, the' former until this day week, and the latter until Friday next 10-siohkow will be the last day on which nomination, of candidates for the vacant seat .in the City .Council will be received. Mr A R. Oliver was nominated several days ago' but no other names have yet been received! We hear, however, that there i 3 a probability of there being at least three candidates. A meeting of the Nelsoa Football Clubwill be held at the Masonic Hotel this evenuig at half -past seven. A special meeting of the Naval Brigade is called for this evening at seven o'clock at the Custom House Hotel, th« Port Mr. Mabin reports the sale by auction of the schooner May, by order of the Public Trustee, for £200. The following replies, given by a woman in Court when under cross-examination today, are a gem in their way ;— Counsel : How do you know it was on Monday you saw them?" Witness; "Because I do." Counsel : «Do you know when the Queen's Birthday is?" Witness: "On the first day of the shooting." Counsel: « And when was the first day of the shooting?" Witness • "On the Hth of May." Counsel: « Can you read ? Witness :"A little." Counsel : Do you know when your birthday is ? " Witness : "I'm not quite certain." Counsel • '•Do you know tae names of the months in the year ?" Witness (perplexedly) : "No " Counsel : » Can you tell me the days of the « x? k » " Witness (more and more puzzled) : IN°'."1 N °'. " , Counsel : "Do you know what to- «^ IS „ ? „ WitQeS3 (brightly and quickly) : Xt S " Couusel : " What i 3 "?" Witness : " Thursday." Br the Wanaka, which sailed for Wellington this afternoon, the following Neison members were passengers :— Messrs Curtis Sharp, Richmond, Baigent, Gibbs and Hursthouse. The Hon. Major Richmond left by the Taranaki on Monday night. Mb. Ashcroft's lecture on "Russia, Turkey and the War," which was eiven yesterday evening at the Public Hall, Stoke, was quite a success, and was most attentively listened to by a large and delighted, audience, who filled the room. This nopular topic is in itself sufficient to engage the attention of an ordinary individual, but when handled in the fluent and interesting manner in which Mr Ashcroft can deal with his subject, it was not surprising to hote the earnest attention which the lecturer gained from his audience, ixofc a symptom of weariuess was visible during the whole two hours that Mr Ashcroft was occupied in the delivery of hi 3 lecture. The meeting terminated by Mr Rout, the chairman, proposing a vote of thanks to Mr Ashcroft, which was warmly responded to by the company present. The Good Templar Dramatic Company, who showed to such advantage on their last appearance before the public, intend to reproduce the drama of "The Bottle " on Friday evening next, when the proceeds will be devoted to the Nelson Hospital Convalescent Fund. Such au attraction and such an object in view should have the effect of drawing an audience quite as large as auy that bave yet assembled at the invitation of this clever little amateur company. . Jaundiced views. The billious and dyspeptic subject takes "jaundiced views" of everything, always looks at the worst side He is despondent, gloomy, full of foreboding in short, a most wretched individual. Let him take heart of grace. There is a certain remedy for thi. depression, for his gastric tortures, for all the ills that a disordered stomach and liver inflict. Udolpho Wo_fk's Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps, taken thrice a day, will make a different man of him in a month.— Advt.
