TheWakatipu arrived from 'Sydney last night. She brings news to July 3rd. m , , Auckland, Saturday. The degree of Bachelor of Arts will be publicly presented to Miss Edgar in the Choral Hall by Mr Lusk, M.H.R. At St. Andrews last evening the Rev. Dr. Bruce was presented by his parishioners with a purse of 650 sovereigns as a farewell testimonial. Dr. Bruce has been their pastor for a quarter of a century. ; The race between the Pet and the Brotherscame off ;to-day in the presence of 800 spectators. , ! The Pet, being longer, gave he** opponent one minute's start. The Brothers got first away. Coming to the winning point the Pet '^fouled a ship in the harbor, but extricated herself; the Brothers, just being the minute of allowed time, tacked and was in the act of winning, when, on approaching the , wharf, shjj suddenly tacked before, passing the winning point. The judges are now considering their decision. .. . Ata meeting of the Harbor Board yesterday the Committee brought up their report recommending the erection of iievr jetties, the extension of the old ones, and other improvements which would so increase the accommodation that the harbor would have berthing space for eleven full sized English ships;Boo feet frontage to jetties for berthing steamers,. 3200 feet for berthing intercolonial ve'sstels.HSM feet frontage of breast- •; work for small vessels, all exclusive of Peacock's jetty. There would be a further available; space ..for tw . large,sbips at the Officera.Boint breakwater>and the whole 1 of ' the Naval Point breakwater. The Committee also recommend the reclamation of sevenacres of land to befaced with breastwork for additional wharfage accommodation. The consideration of the report was postponed. The Board passed a resolution disapproving of Sur day working in connection with siieamers. The Board of Governors of Canterbury College passed a resolutionyesterday strongly urging on the Government the desirability of establishing Boys' High Schools throughout the colonies as links between the primary schools and the University. The agitation against the new railway tariff is rapidly increasing, and the passenger traffic, according to newspaper reports, is*decreasing, while waggons on the public rdiads and coastal steamers aie starting to run in opposition to the railway for: goods traffic! Public meetings of the merchants and agriculturists are called for this week; to consider and protest against the tariff; DuNEDiNj Saturday. Mr Burns, the member for RoSlyn, [addressed his constituents last night. At the appointed hour for commencing the proceedings only five persons were present, bufc when the chair was taken the number had increased to 25. Mr Burns referred to the leadiug questions which engaged the attention of the Assembly last year, also those, likely to be brought forward at the ensuing session. He considers the party with which he w.as allied last year to be broken up, and without any consistency. From his remarks it appears doubtful which party will have his support I at the forthcoming session of Parliament. He declined to pledge himself until he ascertained what are the views of the Government, j Monday. I Justice Johnston and Justice "Williams have arranged that the former shall take the rest of the business at the present circuit sittings here, and that the latter shall go to Christ- j church in the meantime. ' A house occupied by a man named Bacon, ai Ravensbourne, has been burnt down. It was insured in the Standard office for £150, and in the New Zealand office for £160. , A cooking school is about to be opened here by Mrs Fiddley, of Adelaide. Addresses were delivered in connection with it on Saturday afternoon by Dr Coughtrey and Mr Bathgate, R.M. . Hokitika, Monday. Mr Button, M.H.R., addressed a public meeting of his constituents on Saturday evening. After reviewing the last session, he said he wonld support the present Ministry. Headvocated the taxation of unimproved land on its growing value. He hoped a new ,- Bankruptcy Act would be passed ; approved of the principle of the Local Option Bill ; held that Counties or Road Boards would bave to give way ; could not see how the honorarium could be avoided ; favored free and secular education, but not compulsory ; would support a proper distribution of the land fund, and, finally, he defended the Jackson's Bay settlement. A vote of confidence was carried unanimously. Kumara, Suuday. Kelly, another of the unfortunate men involved in the mining accident, was released on Saturday night, and taken to the hospital. He was severely crushed, his limbs from the stomach downwards being perfectly dead. Efforts were made to restore circulation by means of hot bricks and fomentations, but all was in vain. The poor fellow died yesterday. Kiley and Cooney, the other two men, are both dead. Kiley's body was recovered, but Cooney's will not be released till to-day, as there has been another fall of earth. Monday. The body of Cooney, who was killed by the late mining accident was recovered at twelve o'clock last night, badly disfigured. Great difficulty was experienced in extricating it from the fallen debris, owing to the ground continually caving in whilst the rgscuers were afc work. An inquest on the three bodies will be held to-morrow. Subscriptions are being started for the relief of Cooney's wife and family, and a public entertainment is being gdt up for the same object.
