Clou3ton, and 15 football team. Christchurch, Friday. The butchers of Christchurch have established a midwinter show of meat in place of the Christina, display, when the leather is too hot. The first show took place to-day, and some magnificent lots were exhibited. The first prize was taken by Hopkins; Lane, second ; Maine, third. The Chairmaii of the Civil Service Compensation Committee has written to the pppers, stating that the claims of the retired civil servants in this province to compensation have now been nearly all satisfied by the Government so far as the Abolition Act allows. Produce Market:— Wheat, 6s 6d to 7s 9d; oats, 3s 3d to 3s 6d; barley dull, and transactions unimportant. {Lawrence, Saturday. The Royal Hotel afc Waitahuua was burned down yesterday morning, supposed to be the work of an incendiary. It was unoccupied at the time. It was one of the first houses built on the Waitahuna diggings. Khma.ua, Satarday. A serious mining accident occurred on the lead yesterday, and four men have been buried through the ground coming in. The claim was being worked by Cooney, Kelly, Kiley, and Quinlivan, near the prospector's' claim on Dillman's track. Whilst; working in the tunnel fche set of timber gave way causing an immense fall of earth, which completely enveloped the men. The occurrence was not known till the evening when the men should have left work. An examination of the tunnel was made and immediate steps were taken for their rescue. Relays of miners have been working most energetically. Quinlivan was got out at three this morning, not seriously hurt. Kelly can be heard speaking, and it is expected he wili be released this afternoon. It i3 feased that Cooney and Kiley are dead and it will take a long time to recover the bodies. The air in the tunnel is very foul and it is with great difficulty the rescuers can work. One of the men, Cooney, has a wife and family.
