I In the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day; judgment was given in the case of the proprietors of/the News v. those of the Newsletter. At a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbor Board, a committee was appointed to collect materials and form a comprehensive clan for .the improvement of the harbor. The Hon. Yesterday a widow named Quarrie residing at Oamaru died suddenly. After her death, her eldest son Daniel disappeared, aud was not ; heard of until this morning, when he • gave himself up to the police at Waimate. - A post mortem examination was held on the body, and a jury summoned for the inquest, when the police applied for a remand till Monday, on the ground that the son Daniel said he had been the cause of his mother's death. The doctor who made the post mortem, examination said the deceased died from fracture of the skull. The inquest was adjourned till Monday. Meantime, Daniel Quarrie will be brought down from Waimate. The affair has created a fearful sensation, as the Quarries have been residents here many years, and were highly respected. For some years past Mrs Quarrie has been addicted to drinking, and wheu in that state frequently irritated her son Daniel, who was always a quick , tempered boy, and when he saw his mother in drink it annoyed him very much. He iis only about 20 years of age, and has been eugaged for some years with Mr Lane, butcher., Wellington, Saturday. Mr Geo. Thomas reports produce prices as follows:— Flour, colonial, £20, Adelaide, £25; oats, 3s 6d to 4s; bran, Is 2d; wheat, fowl. 4s 3d to 4s 6d, milling, 7s; hams, lo_,d; bacon, 9£-d; cheese, 7d to 8d; maize, ss ; pollard, £7 6s; potatoes, £3 10s to £4. Bluff, Saturday. The Arawata left Melbourne at 235 p.m. on the: 1 8th instant, and cleared the Heads at 5, p.m. Experienced light westerly winds and tine weather until the morning of the 21st, when a fresh breeze came from the north-west, aud increased to a strong gale with a high breaking sea. Shifted at 1-30 a.m. on the following morning to the southward, and continued until arrival this morniog. She brings 335 tons of cargo for all ports, and 3000 sovereigns. Saloou passengers for Nelson: Messrs Parkea '(_), Misses Parkes (3), Misses Bissett, Caendot, and four m the steerage. Also six tons of cargo.
