On*. Sau Francisco mail telegrams inform us that in the event of England becoming involved in war, Lieut.-General Sir John Simmon's will be placed in command of the' army in the East. Sir John Simmons is a brother of the late Rev. F. C. Simmons, who was head master of the Nelson College. He is an olllcer of the Engineers, in which capacity he distinguished himself on several occasions before Sevastopol ,at the time of the Crimean war, during which he gained rapid promotion. 1 'in. funeral of the late Mr A. G. Betts took place this afternoon and was .very largely attended. The procession was headed by Brother Sherwood, followed by the Artillery Band playing the Dead March in Saul, immediately behind them being 70 or 80 Good Templars marching- in pairs hand in hand. Then came the hearse, ten carriages conveying the mourners and friends of the deceased, and a number on foot. It was one of the largest funerals there has been in Nelson for a lon* time, and testified' tothe re- J spect in which the deceased was held. We regret to learn' that Dr. Hector is j seriously itfwith typhoid feveri The anniversary tea in connection with the Wesleyan Church will be held in the schoolroom to-morrow evening, and will he followed by a musical sojree and addresses - by ministers and friends. , From the sth of March to the 25th of April inclusive, seventeen vessels, carrying 68,302 bale of wool arrived at London from New Zealand.
