A magnificent meteor which waa seen by a good many last night is thus described by a correspondent:—"! was walking down Hardy-street about eight o'clock when suddenly the houses were illuminated with a flickering blue light. For a second or two I could not imagine what was the cause, but on turning round I saw one of the most beautiful sights I ever witnessed. Just above the Port hills an enormous meteor was passing swiftly along horizontally from east to west, aud I watched it for two or three seconds, until it disappeared behind a bank of clouds. It was of a bright blue color, and for a long distance back was a clearly defined pink trail, showing the track over which it had passed. This remained visible for some time after the meteor had vanished." "The Bottle" was reproduced by the Good Templar Dramatic Company last night even more successfully, than on Friday, while the Hall was again crammed to overflowing. The acting was most praiseworthy, and there is reason to believe that a third performance would not be given to an empty or even a half empty house. A ca__fo__y compiled and beautifully executed historical chart now on view at Mr H.D. Jackson's is well worth a visit. Starting from 4004: B.C. to 1876 A.D., it shows in panoramic form most of the principal historical events during tbat period. It is 22ft. long by 2ft. 6in, wide, and contains an enormous amount of information, the compilation of which must have involved a vast amount of labor. Copies may be ordered from Mr Jackson. At the meeting of householders held at Upper Moutere last Friday, Messrs Dencker, Beuke, and J. Hewetson were elected members of the Local Committee of Education without opposition. The retiring members, were the Rev. J. Heine, Messrs Beuke and Dencker. A man named George Albert King, died this morning at the Lunatic Asylum, to which he had been committed a few days ago. As is usual in such cases, an inquest will be held. At the Police Court to-day Ambrose Ricketts was charged" before lt. Pollock, Esq., J.P.,. with maliciously and feloniously attempting to set fire to a certain dwellinghouse in Collingwood-street on the 21st May. Mr Fell appeared for the defence. Six witnesses were examined at great length, but, although there was clear proof that a. deliberate attempt at fire raising had been made by somebody, the presiding Magistrate stated that the evidence was insufficient to connect the accused with the offence. He did not, therefore, feel himself justified in committing the prisoner for trial, and must dismiss the case. Licensing Courts were held yesterday at Richmond, Waimea West, and Spring Grove ,' the Commissioners being J. W. Barnicoat, ' F. Keliing, arid H. Martin, jun., Esqs. All the old licenses applied for were allowed, and new ones were granted to George Biggs and Matthew Green for houses at the Tadmor. The following report was received from Constable Gibbs of Upper Motueka. As an official document it is a perfect gem, ' and, as to make any alterations, whether verbal or literal, would be to deprive it of half its force, we give it exactly as written ; — " I beg to Report for the information of the Licensing bench the Licensed House known as Louden s Accommodation house has been Badly Conducted during the Past 12 months Both the House furniture Bares a dirty Slovenly and Delapidated appearance. Complaints are Coming to me from all quarters Concerning this wretched place that of late the House has been frequented by some of the Lowest of characters of Both sex have seen a warm shop or two on the Cost but never seen sutch a hot one as the above Mentioned I would again beg to draw the attention of the Licensing Bench to the Necessity of Compelling the Land lord Provide Necessary Means for foott Passengers crossing the River Several Complaints have been made to me of late Regarding the Neglect of the Conditions of License in this Rispect This is my fourth complaint relative to the above house Louden objects to Have his House inspected he Prevented me from doing so and Said he Should throw up the License he allso said he should apply again he allso used Abusive and threatening, language towards me."
