Blenheim, Monday. In the Supreme Court to-day, before the Chief Justice, the Griand Jury made a presentment for the 'sitting of the District Court. The Judge said he would forward the presentment to Wellington. Sarah Ramsay, charged with forgery at Kaikoura, pleaded guilty. The Grand Jury ignored the bill against William M'lntosh for rick-burn-ing, and he will be sent to the Wellington Lunatic Asylum, from whence it is alleged he had escaped. George Kells, of Kaikoura,, was acquitted on a charge of cattle-stealing and the Crown abandoned a second charge as hopeless. The Borough Council will send a delegate to the Municipal Conference. Mr and Mrs Cotterell close a very successful season to-night. Reefton, Monday. The Hopeful Company cleaned up on Saturday after about a fortnight's crushing, yielding 624 ounces of melted gold. A dividend of 6s has been declared. , Wellington, Monday. The City Conncil passed a resolution to-day by 7 to 3, That Mr Clitnie be appointed engineer for carrying out the drainage scheme, with Mr Blackett as consulting engineer; the Committee of the whole Council to meet Mr Climie and discuss the terms. The motion re the dismissal of oflicials will be further considered at a special meeting on Monday next. •=_.-• Mr Travers, on behalf of the citizens, presented an address and a purse of 175 soys to Michael Monahan, late senior Sergeant of the Police Force here.. There was a large attendance of merchants and other leading citizens at the presentation. Auckland, Monday. Capt. Pallant, of the three-masted-schooner Mera, from Dunedin, while at Hokianga, met with a severe accident. While assisting to Joad timber, which was being lowered into the hold in slings, the gear snapped, breaking the captain's leg, and seriously injuring his chest. CHRiSTCHm-CH, Tuesday. The civilians' ball last' night was very successful. It was held in the Provincial Council chamber and library. Upwards of 200 were present, including the. Governor, the Hon. C. C. Bo wen, and the r principal residents of the city and neighborhood. The Georgia Minisfcrels opened at the Theatre Royal last night to a large house. The performance is favorably criticised. Sunday drinking is becoming very prevalent. In Court to-day, tbe" Inspector of Police said he was unable to find out who . supplied the drink so freely on Sundays. A deputation of Licensed Victuallers waited on the Hon C. C. Bowen to suggest alterations in the Licensing Act with a view to -we've o'clock night licenses" being granted in Christchurch, also allowing the private entrance to remain open on Sundays. Mr Bowe _ said the suggestions were reasonable, and that he would bring them before the Government. . . , Donedin, Monday. •At the annual meeting of tte Chamber of Commerce, heid to-day, the Chairman remarked on one or two subjects mentioned in the report, referring especially to railway communication and the gap between Balclutha and Clinton. Some of their members tho ight this line could be commenced and finished within six months, and the best thing to do would be to bring all their influence to bear on their representatives in the Assembly, so that the latter might call upon the Government to fill up with all possible speed. The Cha nber was undoubtedly in a sickly state, but there was no reason that it should be so, and it could be made a power for good if its members chose to exert themselves in the proper direction, and he hoped the state of almost death, hut certainly somnolence, would soon be done away with. Dunedin merchants -would not be satisfied with the mterprovincial trade, and the day was not far off when they would extend their ramifications to the neighboring, group of islands instead of allowing, as now, New Caledonia to sends its orders to Melbourne. The balance sheet, showing an indebtedness of £65 17/10 to. the Treasurer, was adopted, the Chairman characterising it as a disgrace to themselves. The City Council to-day approved the recommendation of the Finance Committee to exchange £12,000 and the Cattle Market Reserve (being nine and a half acres of the town belt) for the site and .building of the Dunedin General Hospital. Two additional plans hare been received for the Dunedin Town Hail. _, _ Tuesday. Dr. Carr declares Walker, the trance medium, to be a humbug, and offers to lecture on any subject in a more philosophical manner. . Timahu, Tuesday. At the Supreme Court true bills were found in every case except Dugald Blue for sheep-stealing. William Lechner, for embezzlement,/ was sentenced to two years; William Powell, for larceny, tjo six months; John Wilson alias Burns, for horse stealing to 18 months; Cornelius Toll was found guilty of larceny, but sentence was deferred. A. Friedlander is now being tried for rape at Geraldine. The two libel cases are expected to occupy a whole day.
