Wellington, Thursday. In the City Council this afternoon, after a long discussion, the report of the Committee re dismissal of Corporation officials was referred to a committee of the whole Council. The question of the adoption of Mr Chime's drainage scheme was postponed ti^l the next meeting, as was also the motion r<t the reclamation of Te Aro Foreshore
Friday. Mr Thomas reports the following produce ■prices :— Flour, £18 to £19.; oats, 3s 3d to 3s 6d ; bran, Is 3d ; wheat, milling 7s, chick 4s 3d ; hams lod to lid ; bacon, 9d to iod ; cheese, 7Jd to'B£d ; potatoes, £3 15s to £4 : > maize, 6s 6d.
Foxton, Thursday. He railway accident near Fielding lyesterday, it appears the. train consisted of three carriages and one truck. The engine-, and break ran off the rails, sir.ashing the which wiil take some weeks to repair. The , Manager and Mr Stewart, with proper appliances, started at once to superintend the neccessary repairs.
Hawbba, Thursday. A deliberate attempt was made last night to burn down Wink's new batcher's shop. The culprit has not yet been discovered. Hot cinders, shaving, and rags saturated with kerosene were used. The conflagration was stopped before much damage was done.
Dunedin, Thursday. A brick wall on Kirkpatrick and Glendinning's premises, in Princes-street, fell this afternoon, carrying away the millinery department and work-rooms." Nearly all the girls, about 50 in number, were at dinner when the accident occurred, but of those on the premises two were badly injured. Several thousand pounds worth of property was destroyed.
Invercargill, Thursday. In the second day's coursing the sport "was very good. The course was better than yesterday, but tho attendance was not so large. All the aged stakes were won by Brydon's Souter; Brydon's Cricket runner up. Puppy Stakes won by Surman's Gipp; Martin's Spangle runner up. i . Christchubch, Thursday. • The conversazione with which the Art Exhibition iu the new Museum buildings, was opened last night, was a splendid success. There was a magnificent collection of works of art, scientific apparatus, and curiosities. The former included upwards of six hundred pictures, the majority being of very high class. The scientific apparatus was (collected and arranged under the supervision of Professor Bickerton, who, together with other gentlemen, conducted numerous interesting experiments. There were nearly one thousand persons present. The Governor, accompanied by the Hon. C. Bowen, arrived soon after the opening of the conversazione, and was received by- the Canterbury College Governors and a guard of honor formed by the Christchurch Artillery. His Excellency remained some. time, and exhibited great interest in the proceedings. The Art Exhibition will be open for several days free. . The poultry exhibition opened last night with 368 exhibits, generally of a superior quality.
