Auckland, Wednesday, The Licensed Victuallers are preparing to equalise Auckland license fees. A meeting of the Foofcbatl Club is called to consider the invitation from the Dunedin Club to meet the Dunedin and Nelaon teams at Wellington in August to hold a football tournament, the game to be played in heafcs. Fielding, Wednesday. The 1.30 p.m. train from Foxton to Fielding ran into the siding at Rechter, Manstead, and Co's sawmills near Bunnythorpe. The engine collided with a truck— engine and carriages all going off the rails. No passengers were injured except the Fielding constable, who was slightly injured. Christchurch, Wednesday. The Governor witl open the new College buildings to-morrow, and will attend the exhibition and conversazione in the new Museum. At the annual Licensing Court yesterday all the applications for renewals were granted except three, which were adjourned for certain building improvements tb be carried out. Five applications for new licenses were refused, and two adjourned, as the buildings proposed to be licensed were not yet erected. The traffic returns on the Southern Railway, including Oamaru, for April, were 'as follows :— Passengers, 86,498— £9,024; parcels, &c, £507 ; freight, 49,068 tons— £l9,99l ; : total, £29,526. Thursday. The Canterbury College was opened By the Governor this afternoon, and addresses were read by the Chairman of the Board of Governors and Professor Cook. The Governor, in reply, spoke afc some length on education generally. A large number of ladies and gentlemen were present. After the opening ceremonial, the Governor had luncheon wifch the Board of Governors. Dunbdin, Wednesday. A public meeting was held in the Temperance Hall last night to consider the Local Option Bill. About 800 people were present, and the Mayor presided. The following resolutions were carried :—" That, in the opinion of this meeting, the principle embodied in the Bill is equitable, practicable, aad likely to afford public relief from many of the evils resulting from fche consumption of Intoxicating liquors." " Thafc, in the opinion of this meeting, no system of licensing laws has yet been been effective for the prevention of those evils to prevent which they were enacted, and therefore the change is necessary both in the principle and method o ' tbe laws dealing with the liquor trade." " That, in the opinion of this meeting, a very large proportion of the vice, crime, disease, poverty, and other social evils which exist in this colony are the direct result of the traffic of the using of alcoholic beverages.", A petition for presentation to the Assembly was also submitted and appoved. The notorious M'Laren interrupted the proceedings, and a free fight eusued, which ended in his being thrown down stairs and out into the street. Yesterday afternoon the Pre3bytery:metin Conimittee to receive suggestions as to the suoject of getting the new choir endowed by the Synod. The Board will probably decide to adhere to the original plan. i Napier, Wednesday. Afc the Revision Court tlrs morning a large puiuber of objections made by a clerk in Mr Sieehan's office to the names of certain Europeans on the list of new claims were withdrawn, as also were fche objections raised to a large number of Maori names. Afc the Licensing Court yesterday the application of Horace Ford for a license for a horse at the Spit was refused. All the other applications were granted, bufc several publicans were warned that if their premises were not kept in better order their icenses would be cancelled. Oamabp, Wednesday. The Waimate Steeplechase Club held its anuual meeting to-day, the weather being fine, and the course in good order. The attendance was large. Waimate Steeplechase Cup of .75 soys : Banjo, 1; Bennette, 2; Tommy, 3. Baojo won easily. Will-if -I-can baulked. Maiden Plate of 50 soys : Bennette, 1; Lone Hand, 2. Jack and Will-if-I-can also ran. All fell but Bennette, who won easily by several lengths. Waimate Steeplechase Handicap of 100 sots, distance three miles — Banjo 1, Bennette 2, Will-if-I-can 3. Lottery started, but threw his rider after going a mile. It was a good race between the three first, who were all riding hard, Banjo winning by four length's. Consolation Handicap of 40 soys— Tommy Dodd 1, Lone Hand 2, Lottery 3. Will-if-I-can baulked and Jack threw his rider at the third fence. Tommy Dodd and Lone Hand kept together to the water jump, where Lone Hand fell, but was quickly remounted. Tommy Dodd won easily by six lengths. Inveroargill, Wednesday. The first meeting of the Southland Coursing Club took place to-day at Morton Mains. The weather was splendid and the attendance large. Hares were plentiful and the sport was very good, none of the stakes were settled, and will be run off to-morrow. Wellington, Thursday. The Governor has remitted the sentence of two years penal servitude passed last; session on Richard Gordon, who was convicted of horse stealing afc Wairarapa, as the evidence on which he was convicted is shown to have been unreliable. In the case of Hooper v. Reformer newspaper for £75 damages for insufficient notice of dismissal as editor, the plaintiff was nonsuited. The case will probably be taken into tbe Supreme Court. A return lately prepared shows fche progress made by the City of Wellington during the past seven or eight years as regards the value of rateable property, which in 1870-71 was. £72,125, whereas ifc now stands at £176,050.
