While at Port Chalmers the Hawea was placed in the dock, where she had her bottom cleaned, and was painted ail over, and she certainly looks all the better for it. Notwithstanding the bad weather experienced lately the alterations to the steamer Result have been pushed forward rapidly. The paddle-boxes are now finished, as is also the new bridge. The paddle-wheels have been shipped, and noiv only want the floats fixed to them. The deck-houses are in a forward state, and the steamer has been caulked all over. Below, the engines have been fixed, and yesterday. afternoon the fire was lighted for the purpose of testing the boiler and engines. Steam was soon got up, and a trial of the engine took place in the evening. It appeared to work very smoothly, though, of course, with a little stiffness, which is incidental to all engines on trial for the first time. The only perceptible noise to be heard was the grating of the cogwheel, but this, we understand, will entirely cease when the wheel receives a coat of tallow. The engine is a very compact piece of .machinery, and is a credit to the makers, Messrs Moutray and Crosbie, of the Soho Foundry. The boiler also was tested, and was found to be faultless. As the tide had left the steamer at the time the trial was made it was impossible to tell how fast the engines will drive the wheels through the water, but judging by the speed at which they revolved in the air we should say they will propel the vessel along at a much greater speed than formerly. The liesult will not be ready for a trial trip until a day or two, as there are still one or two necessary things to be done before she is ready. The whole of the alterations will be effected by the latter end of next week, when the steamer will be ready to be placed in the hands of the painters.
