R. LUCAS k SON. "Is there no hope? ' the sick man said ; The silent doctor Bhook his head. ' c While there i<» life there's hope,' he cried. 1 " JEgroto, dum animus est, spes est." DR. L. IT SMITH (The only legally-qualifled Medical man advertising), CONSULTS — On all affeationa of the Nervous System (no m itter from what cause arising) ; on all broken-down Constitutions ; on all Diseases arising from early Indiscretions ; on Gout ; on Rheumatism. IN these Colonies, those excesses which we have indulged ia " hot youth "' tell upon us with fearful interest. Our regrets are useless, our rcpitiiogs fu'.ile. The sole idea should be the chances we possess of remedying the ills we alteady have, or comb iting tue effecis likely t-j result. Hide it as he may — put on as good an exterior as he can — still is the victim conscious that he is a living He, and that sooner or iaier his vice* will discover him to the world. Our Faith— our obligations to society at large— the welfare of our future offspYing— and the duty we owe to ourselves — forbida procraati nation, and points out to us not to wait till the ravages break oai in our constitutions. Before negotiating with a rnerch mt, before engaging with a confidential clerk; before employing a barrister— a careful m^n makes inquiries as to thtir standing ; aad, in the case of a legal adviser, both as to his legal qualifications aad as to his capabilities of transacting the individual business he consults him upon, btrange to say, however, in the selection of a medical man, the sufferer frequently omiiß thes-3 necessary precautions. And without regard to the fitness, qualification, experience, and ability for the particul;ir ailment requiring treatment, he consults the ueaest man, whose experience and practice, perhaps, lies in quite an opposite direction. Ia it astonishing that so many are driven mad, are ruined in health, aud are bankrupt in spirits, hope, and money? Have I not, tor years, pointed out to them that I, Dr. L. L. Smith, am the only legally-qualified medical man advertising in the Colonies ? Have I not also prosecuted, at my own expense, these very quacks, and exposed the various nostrums they are selling— such as Fbosphodyne, Essence of Life, &c— and had them analysed, and found ttum to consist of ''Burnt sugar and flavoring matter," and the certificates I have pbovkd to bo all forgeries. It is for this reason that I step out of the ethics of the profession and advertise, to give those who requrie the services of my branch an opportunity of knowing they can consult a legally qualified man, aud one moreover who has made this his especial study. Dr L L. Smith is the only legally qualified medical man advertising, and he has been in Melbourne 21 years in full practice on Nervous Diseases Loss of Fowtr and Debility Syphilitic Affections Want of Condition Gout and Rheumatism. Dr. L. L. SMITH can beconsulted by letter— Pee £I. Medicines forwarded to all the colonies. Dr. L. L. SMITH, 182 Collins st. Easfc. a*,(Late the Residence of the Governor), MSLBOUBNE. 21 Q
