Mr Courtney sold yesterday yearling cattle at £^; dairy cows, £10 to £11; quiet heifers near calving, £7 15s to £9; pair of bullocks, £21 16s; store ewes, 6s 6d; lambs, 4s; fat ewes, 10s. The Taranaki, from Manukau, has passed on, as the sea is too rough for communication with the shore. Wellington, Friday. This morning Thomas Brown, a prisoner on remand for stealing watches from Duncan Stone, hanged himself. The act was most deliberate. He took the opportunity at breakfast time to remain behind iu the cell a few minutes. He got a piece of rope used to tie bedding, and fixed it over the door, lie then got on the footsool, took off his boots, kicked the stool away, and fire minutes after the warder missing him went iu search, and found him dead. An inquest will t be held to-morrow. Westpout, Friday. A heavy gale is raging here. A mishap •occurred to the steamer Maori last night. While weighing anchor in the roadstead a heavy sea striking her caused a sudden jerk, which carried away the steam winch, completely smashing it. The anchor and thirty fathoms of chain cable slipped, but the first has been buoyed for picking up when ,the gale abates. Timaku, Thursday. A frightful accident happened at the firing of the royal salute to-day to a gunner named Wallis of the Timaru Artillery. He loaded the gun, and when the order to fire was given forgot that he had loaded and made as if to load again. The firing gunner did not see him and pulled the lanyard. The gun was fired and blew Wallis's arm off, severely injuring the right side of his head as well. He now'lies in the hospital, and little hope is entertained of his recovery: Friday. Wallis, the Artilleryman who was wounded yesterday at Timaru, died this morning. An inquest will be held this afternoon. Auckland, Friday. Mr Buckland quotes horses, heavy and draught, £26 to £43;' medium ditto, £14 to £18; beef, 26s to 30s; fat wethers, 18s to 20s. Butcher Boy is the favorite for the steeplechase. The bookmakers are chary s ; nce yesterday's losses. The Auckland Jockey Club met last night j and disqualified Fishhook and Derritt, and they sustained the decision of the Dunedin Club regarding Coleman.
