The barque Chaudiere, Captain Pitfield, arrived at Wellington from Newcastle last week. From a private letter received from tbe chief officer we learn that she had au exceedingly rough passage down, whicb is described as "awful." In the height of a Leavy gale several tremendous seas broke on board, carrying away a great portion of the bulwarks, and smashing one of the boats to pi is. Several sails were also blown away during the gale. After discharging her cargo the Chaudiere will load for London, and probably sail next month. Our telegrams mentioned yesterday that the clipper ship Otaki had succeeded in accomplishing the distance between Port Chalmers and London in 66 days, the , uickeafc passage on ucord. The voyage has only once been done under 70 days, and that by the ship Oliver Lang, the bones of which vessel are now lying in Wellington, exactly twenty years ago, when the running was made in 68 days. The passage of the Otaki must have entailed an average speed of nine knots per hour. The p.s. Wallace, Captain Dillon, arrived alongside the Albion Wharf at 12-30 to-day. She left Nelson at 6 p.m. on Sunday, and had very hazy weather Vith showers of rain, which co lfcinued until arrival at Wanganui at 2*15 p.m. on Monday; left afc 430 p.m. yesterday, and arrived here as above. Expe ienced a nasty cross sea in the Straits, which considerably retarded the progress of the steamer.

She left Melbourne at 4-30 p.m. on May 9, passed Cape Tiller at 2*30 p.m. on May llth, and arrived at Hobart Town at 6 p.m. the same day; left afc 3 p.m. on May 12th, and arrived off the Solander at 6 p.m. on May 16, making Bluff Harbor at daylight on May 17; sailed at 430 p.m., and reached Port Chalmers at 8 a.m. on Friday; ?ef fc afc 3-30 p.m., and arrived afc Lyttelton afc noon on Saturday; sailed at 6 p.m. on Monday, aud arrived at Wellington at 1 1 a.m. yesterday; left again at 5-30 p.m., and arrived here as above. Experienced light head winds throughout the passage from jMelbourne, and fine weather up the Coast. The Tararua came into harbor this afternoon, and will sail for Melbourne and West Coast ports at 5 p.m. The s.s. Kennedy, A. Palmer commander, returned to port this morning at 6 o'clock. She reports leaving Nelson on Friday, tho 18th instant, at 4 p.m., and had strong N.E. winds with heav> sea and thick weather! On Saturday at 7*50 a.m., when off Mohikinui, the main shaft of the starboard engine broke, leaving, the steamer almost in a disabled state, the wind increasing to a gale and the sea rising. Crossed the Westport bar at noon on Mondyy, and transhipped cargo and passengers into the Charles Edward, which left for Greymouth the same night. The Kennedy left for Nelson afc 9 a.m. yesterday, arriving here as above. Had fresh S.W. winds up to Spit End, when it died away. Passed the Murray off Auatori at 9 o'clock last night.
