Greymodtii, Monday. John Reay, a compositor in the Argus office, shot himself through the head while in bed this forenoon. No reason is known for the act, as the deceased was a remarkably steady young man. mu -r. • Tuesday. The Energetjc Company's crushing for five weeks gave 9210zs 7dwts of melted gold. A dividend of six shillings per scrip has been declared. mL _ , Wellington, Tuesday. Tha Loan and Mercantile Agency report under date London 18th inst.:—" Wool competition increasing; quotations on an average a half-penny to a penny better than afc the opening. The principal advance is in superior greasy and superior combing. Washed cross-bred and scoured are unchanged. Seedy and burry wools are neglected. Up to date 58,000 bales have been sold." Chkistchukch, Monday. The Drainage Board had a meeting to-day, lasting six hours, to discuss the resolutions condemnatory of Mr Carruthers' drainage scheme, which was passed at -a recent meeting of ratepayers in the city and suburbs. The Board decided to adhere to Mr Carruthers' scheme, but to give the ratepayers a month to consider it, and if afc the expiration of that time the ratepayers opposed to the scheme presented a petition signed by not less than half the ratepayers in the district asking the Board to resign, they would do so. Only one out of nine members of the Board dissented from this course being pursued. Timaru, Monday. Great indignation has been aroused here by the refusal of the Rev. Mr Giles, Presbyterian Minister, to bury the late J. G.Fulton, proprietor of the Sportsmens' Arms, on the ground that he was not a communicant. The Ven. Archdeacon Harper eventually conducted the service. Auckland, Monday. A new paddle steamer for Auckland has been shipped afc Glasgow (in sections), of 200 tons register. . . , _, Tuesday. During a heavy gale a sea broke over her straining her seriously. A man fell overboard, -bufc was picked up. * The tidal phenomenon caused a rise and fall of three feet six inches in Sydney.
