CITY COUNCIL.

The adjourned meeting was held last night, when there were present all the members but Cr Picketing.; Letters were : read as follows:— From Mr Symons and several other residents at the Port asking for the extension of the gas service along the Port road— referred to Public Works from the Nelson Fire Brigade asking what subsidy they might look for this year— consideration postponed; from N.- Edwards and Co. stating- that the price of Grey coal at the Albion Wharf would be for large consumers 30s, and for small quantities 32s per ton; from Mr George, the manager of the Wellington gasworks, stating that he would visit Nelson about the end of the month. The monthly report on the gasworks showed that during April 59 tons 13cwt 3qrs of coal bad been carbonised, the yield being 455,950, feet of.ga3, of which 70,150 feet; equal to 15 per cent, had been lost by leakage, condensation, &c. ; 347,800 feet had passed through consumers meters, and 38,000 feet had been used in street lamps, offices,' &c It stated that the demand for gas wassteadily increasing, in proof of which the following figures were adduced:— ln April, 1875, 199,390 feet were produced, in April; 1876, 312,89.0 feet, and in the month just closed 455,950 feet. The general working of the department was reported to be satisfactory. - Tenders for the supply of horses and carts Were received as follows:— W. Orsman, cart ahd one horse 7s per day; two horses, 12s; drivers, 6s each. John Lock, two carts, horses, and drivers, 26s per day. The former tender was accepted. The Town Clerk was authorised to have the electoral roll printed in an inexpensive form. ' The Chairman of the Finance Committee reported a credit balance at the Ban'c of £609. The gorse question cropped up again, and was referred to the Public Works Committee. The consideration of the bye-laws with a view to their re-construction was adjourned until the next meeting. The Council then adjourned.
