May 1, Colonial Government steamer Stella, 158, Johnston, for Sandspit. — steamer Lyttelton, 86, Scott, for Blenheim. — cutter Planet, 15, Thorne, for Motueka.
The Lyttelton left for Blenheim and Wellington this afternoon. The Murray leaves Greymouth to-night for Westport and Nelson. The Kennedy arrived at Westport this morning. The Lady Barkly sailed for Motueka and Golden Bay last evening. The Ringarooma sailed from Melbourne for New Zealand yesterday with the Suez mail. The schooner Awaroa finished taking in coal from the Ansdell this morning, and com3 menced shipping general cargo. She will sail for Wanganui to-morrow. The ketch Pearl hauled on the cradle near the Commercial .Wharf this morning for the parpose of being cleaned. The Result was safely got off the bank on which she stuck by last evening's tide, aud as it was not deemed advisable to attempt to bring her any further up the creek on account of the shallowness of the water, she was taken down to the Corporation Wharf, where she will receive the new engines and boiler, now in process of construction for her. The Colonial Government steamer Stella, Captain Johnston, on a visit to the Lighthorses, came into harbor last evening at eight o'c < .'.. She left Wellington yesterday inorirng at eight o'clock, and called in at The Brothers for the purpose of landing stores, but there was such a heavy sea running and strong wind blowing from the S.E. that it was. impossible to communicate with the shore, and the Stella consequently passed on, arriving here as above. She passed the steamers Wellington and Maori near Jackson's Head yesterday afternoon, the former leading by nearly a mile. After shipping some stores the Stella sailed^this morning for the Sandspit, where she will laud them. Fears are entertained for the safety of the schooner Bonnie Lass, hailing from this port, which left, Lyttelton for Hokitika on April 4th with a cargo of breadstuffs. It was known that she was out in the S.E. gale, which was the strongest blow experienced on the coast, for years. The brigantine Prosperity, which put in to the Croixelles about a lortnight ago, and which was out in the gale, saw the Bonnie Lass then, since which time nothing has been seen or heard of her, She was owned by Mr D. Gilbertson, of this place, and commanded by Captain W. Aitken, who is well known as an experienced and skilful seaman. The reported wreck in Falliser Bay has given rise to a Tariety of conjectures as to the identity of the vessel. The names of the schooner Edward and brigantines Kate Brian and Circe have been mentioned iv connection with it, but nothing is said about the Bonnie Lass, all of which were out in the late gale, and have not, so far as yet, reached their destination. The wreckage.;found in Palliser Bay consisted of nine plates with chain plates attached, and aix planks about 14ft long. A gangway and companion hatch were subsequently picked up, and from these it was ascertained that the vessel had been painted black over green. This does not answer to the Bonnie Lass' description, as she was pain.cd green. We have not heard whether the authorities have taken any steps towards despatching a steamer to look for the missing vessels, but the suspense of the owners of the vessels and friends of the crew 3 would be allayed if this were done.
