At the annual meeting of Justices of the Peace, a resolution was passed that each Justice should attend at least four times a year, and that the daily rota be formed for attendance of two justices on days when the Resident Magistrate is engaged elsewhere. The Harbor Board haa resolved to cail for competitive designs for the best plan for the conservation of the harbor. The bonus for the first design will be £250.' The Governor holds his levee to-day. -.'.- Christchurch, Wednesday, The Magisterial work at Christchurch has become so heavy that Mr Whitefoord, R;M. at Kaiapoi, has been appointed assistantResident Magistrate. At a meeting of the shareholders of the Permanent Investment Association it transpired that the defalcations of Herdson, the late chief clerk, amounted to nearly £6000 instead of £600 as previously stated. The defalcations extended over five years during . part of which the Association held a guarantee policy for £.1000 in the Australian Aili- < ance Company, but as the claim under it had not been made as required within three months of the expiration of the policy, the Company refused to pay. This was unfavorably commented upon at the meeting. The question pf sending a detective to arrest Herdson, who is living near San Francisco, was left to the decision of the Directors.
