The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, APRIL 21, 1877.
The statistical information contained in a Wellington telegram which we publish today is of serious import to the Colony, showing as it does that the Customs revenue has fallen off to the extent of nearly £20,000 as compared with the corresponding period of last year. The financial position of New Zealand is not such that she can afford to have her income reduced by .£BO 000 a year, aud it is quite clear that the Assembly in its next session will have to briug about a large reduction in the expenditure or to impose increased taxation; We notice with regret that the decrease in the Customs receipts in Nelson in proportion to the amount actually received is far greater than in any other part of the colon)'. The actual decrease is larger at Dunedin where the receipts are £15,218 less than during the March quarter of last year. It is notified that the Banks will be closed on Monday, St. George's Day. JVe are requested to state that the Posto nee will be open for the delivery of letters between the hours of 9 and 10.30 a,m. tomorrow. • Mr. Greenfield, the Commissioner of CroAvn Lands, started for the Tadmor this morning. Probably some official report of the progress of the diggings may be looked for on his return. An inquest was held yesterday afternoon at Foxhill on the body of the late John Kerr, when evidence was elicited similar to what has already appeared in print, and a verdict of " Accidental death " was returned. We understand that Police-Sergeant Nash has laid a criminal information for libel against Mr E. F. Jones, in corr.-2-quence of an advertisement bearing his name which appeared in the Mail on Thursday evening. We are glad to learn thas Nelson hops are being disposed of at rates which must prove satisfactory to the growers, a telegram from Auckland having been shown us to-day stating that a parcel had been sold there at Is 9_.d per lb. A droll accident occurred this morning to one of the laborers eagaged at the harbor works, who, while iu the act of walking along the wall with a hod of mortar on his shoulder, tripped, and fell headlong into the water. A few seconds elapsed before anything was seen of him, and it was thought that he had struck the wall in his descent, but by-and-bye a hat appeared above water, quickly fo'lowed by its owner, who still retained hold of the hod. He was immediately pulled out of the water apparently none the worse for his immersion beyond a good wetting A lecture on " Hidden Forces " will be delivered in the Wesleyan Church, Spring Grove, on Monday evening, by Mr Asheroft, who has already given proof in Nelson of his ability as a lecturer. The Nelson choir will be in attendance, and will sing at intervals during the evening. A special train for the occasion will be laid on from Nelsou. The installation of a Master and officers of the Forest Lodge of Freemasons will take place at Wakefield on Monday, being the festival of St. George. There will be a dinner in the evening. Thr Customs receipts for the week ending this day amounted to £652 2s 3d. The Charles Edward, which arrived from West Coast ports this morning, brought the first shipment of coal from the Coal Pit Heath Company's mine. It is of excellent quality, ancl is reported to be in many respects superior to Newcastle coal, and is admirably adapted for household purposes. The San Francisco mail will arrive by the Taranaki about midnight. A morbid appetite for excitement is the only effect of the unmedicated and adulterated spirits frequently used under the impression that they are wholesome stimulants. Abandon such "burning fluids" at once and forever, lf you are weak, low spirited, dyspeptic, nervous, or suffering from the effects of exhaustion, use tbat genuine recuperant of bodily energy, that real stomachic aud nerve anodyne, Udolpho Wolfe's Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps. — Advt.
