[advertisement.] To the Editor ov the « Evening Mail.' SIR— I consider it only fair to myself and the public to say a few words in reference to the evidence given at the inquest on the late fire that is supposed to have occurred in my shop. Constable Cooper mrsfc have seen mo lock my shop door and go directly towards my home afc about a quarter befone ten o'clock on Sunday night, consequently he could uot expect to find me there at one o'clock next morning. Evan Lloyd states that he was watching Jones' shop. Now, Sir, Evan Lloyd has repeatedly desired me to sub"senbe sou ething for him under the pretence that he protected my pronerty, which I declined, believing that he created the billet because he was not ou frierdly terms with hard work. And is ifc likely that he would pay particular attention to premises that he was not paid for, and neglect "property that he was paid for looking after? In fact, lam : compelled to believe with the general public that the- evidence I refer to was giveu and received more for the purpose of damaging me in my unfortunate position than to dis° cover the cause of the fire, and if ever Constable Cooper or Evan Lloyd are called upon to give evidence on oath again I hope they will not forget the ninth commandment. In conclusion, I beg to express my sincere thanks to my very many friends for the warm sympathy exhibited to me during the last few days. (Signed) E. E. JONES.
