The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, APRIL 20, 1877.

It is something for a Nelson manufacturer to be proud of that he can produce an article which will stand the test of comparison with manufactures of alike kind from all parts of the world. This has been done'by Mr James Smith, W;ho sent twelve different descriptions of wine to the Philadelphia Exhibition, where, as we learn from the Government Gazelte,*_e was awarded a prize. What that prize was, or whether it was given for the collection of wines or for any one perticular kind, is not at present known, as the^articulars are not yet to hartd. but there remains the fact, of -which as we saidbefore Mr Smith may well- be* proud, that he was a successful exhibitor "at the great world's fair recently held in America. It may not be generally known to what extent the wine making* basiness is* carried on by Mr Smith, but a visit to his cellar shows clearly that the quantity he turns out is sufficiently large to occupy aconsiderable amount of labor in its production, while the quality may be ascertained by the agreeable process of tasting to be such as must meet with the approval of the most fastidious. The amouut made yearly is between 65 and 7o quartercasks, to produce which close upon seven tons of fruit, including grapes, cherries, gooseberries, and currants are required. Australian wines have obtained so high a character that to export Nelson wines to that colony would be generally regarded as about as sensible a proceeding as sending coals to Newcastle, yet, strange to say, it is in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney that Mr Smith finds his principal market, his wine being sold there at prices ranging from 36s to 42s per dozen. We congratulate; Mr Smith -upon his success, and trust that.he may go ori.and prosper. We have to acknowledge the receipt from Mr \V. liennie, of Toronto, Canada, his descriptive seed catalogue for 1877. We shall be happy to show it to any who are interested in such, matters. ... Tiie seventeenth annual meeting of the members of the.Harmonic Society, was held at their Hall last night,.when a large number were present, Mr Scaife in the chair. Ak accident'oecurr'ed a 1 day or two ago to a [man named Piper, 'who was engaged in breaking stones in the Maitai Valley, when ,a fragment flew up and hit him a severe blow on the eye, Fears are entertained that loss of sight will be the consequence, . Mr. Gilbert, the librarian of the Nelson Institute, writes requesting that all subscribers who have books or periodicals belonging to the library to return them without delay, as he is about to prepare a catalogue. There is a box into which books may bo dropped in the absence of the librarian.
