A .mac as occurred in Hardy-street on Saturday uujht between Mr F. 11. Rives' and Mr 11. Moor, the editor of the Nelson Daily Times, the latter receiving severe punishment during the eucounter. The cause ■of the row was certain remarks which occurred in a letter signed " Autolycus " in the. Times of that day, wherein pointed reference was made to other individuals than the principal object of the attack. By the position Jje has recently occupied in the Bankruptcy Court, Mr Kives has rendered himself a fair object for newspaper comment, and it is not likely that any Remarks made about him would be regarded by the public as too caustic or severe, but the writerof the letter in question went beyond this altogether, and invaded the privacy of individuals to drag whom before the public, even by iuueudo, was not only uujugtjjiable but most reprehensible. We have 'been assured by the author that he had no intention of referring to any oee or more persons in particular, to which we can but reply that in that case Ihi mo3fc uitforfan&te " l the expressions he A uera I ja P e r writer—

more" especially ,in s a small community such as this— cannot "possibly exercise too much care ia avoiding even the semblance of a reference to private individuals with whom, <sr whose actions, the public has no right to iuterfere,in.any \Vay Whatever. Were this oitce allowed' none could feel safe, for none would know when their turn was to come for having their private matters exposed to public gaze. The rough handling received by the editor of the Times on Saturday night will, it is to be hoped, lead to the exercise of greater caution and discretion for the future on the part of " Autolyous." Tire following letter has been addressed by Colonel Moule, the acting Under Secretary for -Defence, to Captain Marshall:— "Militia and Volunteer Office, Wellington, 11th April, 1877.— Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 6th instant, reporting ou the late Easter Encampment of Volunteers at Richmond, and am instructed by the Hon Dr Pollen to convey to you (and through you to the officers and volunteers) an expression of his satisfaction of the proceedings and the success attending the encampment. I have written to Mr Canning thanking him for the use of his paddocks, and for his uniform attention and kindness;~l have, &c, W. Moule, Lieut-Colonel." ■ ' ; Hue Post ofThursday last says:— "The telegraphic news that the directors of the Unipn Steamship - Company had reduced Captain Andrew, the able and popular commander of the"s:s.;_Taranaki, to the grade of. mate, in consequence of -that steamer touchrhg^hag ReefAinjarfoff on her last trip : : from Eylteltion to Port "Chainlets, has occasioned niuch comment. Until the evidence given in $hd.' official enquiry ait Dunedin.is bfefore us it .would be premaiure^to expressf any' opinion <s*j Jthe ijustice-of this course of action on the Jmrb of; the directors, tfufc a very strohg feel-. ing..was prevalent in town to-day thufc Capt. Andrew had received very hard measure, especially comparing the directors' action in this' case and in certain previous cases of a similar nature. Captain Andrew enjoys the reputation of being one of the most skilful and experienced, and, we might even add, most rigidly abstemious, of all the commanders on this coast j and there is a strong feeling of sympathy. with him, on the part; both of ' his brother captains and of the general public, under what is deemed the unmerited Harshness with; which he has been "treated by his employers." We may add that the same feeling exists in Nelson, where all who have been in the habit of travelling with Capt. Andrew are unanimous in the opinion that anything Jike, wilful carelessness on.his.parl is little short of an impossibility. Tfi£njio3jt valuable prize in life's lottery is Health.
