Undeb the heading ■«' Perils of Immigration" there 'appeared- in the Colonist this 1 morning a.: highly sensational paragraph wherein is graphically described " the most sha'meful treatment to which a passenger bv the emigrant ship Northampton «as° subjected during the voyage." Thinking it strange thai the facts as related had escaped the notice of our reporter who visited the vessel and went over the greater parfc'of it, we made enquiries, the result of which is that we are in a position to state on the authority of the Health Officer in 'Kelson, that the whole story is a pure fabrication from beginning to end. The passenger referred to had been on two occasions before leaving.Eng'and placed under restraint on account of insanity, and Oft the voyage out symptoms of lria'iiia-showed themselves again to such an extent that it became necessary to place him" in confinement, and so violent was he that he had to be removed from the men's hospital into a ■separate ward, which was of ample size;"well ventilated, and having a comfortable bunk He was, we are assured, well fed and attended to, and the remedies used were no more severe:thau, the circumstances required. We quite agree with our contemporary that after the statements he has "made there ought to be an enquiry into the affair in Wellington. We would- again remind our readers of the " Cl-istinas Tree " at the Provincial Hall tonight. The prizes, which are the gifts of a number of ladies, are many of them of considerable value, and very few, if any, will befound to be worth less than the one shilling charged for the tickets. During the evening there will be music, and singing, and refreshments of all kinds will be obtainable in the Grand Jury room at moderate rates. It will be necessary for those who mean to take tickets to be early in attendance as the drawing will commence at half past seven. The Motueka Relief Committee met last night.
