Buchanan late Clerk of the Akaroa R.M. Court, was charged with embezzlement. Erom the evidence ■ given it.appeared that Buchanan received for acting as.Cierk of the Court, Customs officer; and Pfts'tajaster theijsmn of i .£l2O per year. The books or" the Court showed that they had been kept in a very curious manner. The jury' returned >,a "verdict .of Not.Guilty. Nathan Powell, for horse-stealing, was sentenced to' three years imprisonment. .' - Oakauu, Monday. Feeling dissatisfied at the decision of the stewards at the lat'erace meeting, when the horse Fishhook was disqualified, Mr O'Brien to day sent a letter to the stewards asking them to re-consider their decision. A meeting of the stewards thereupou took place' to ' consider the letter, and after considerable discussion, in which it was pointed out that even though O'Brien could show that his jockey was to blame he must be held responsible for the acts of his servant, it was re- i solved that the stewards did not deem it necessary to reconsider the decision arrived at on the course. ; Duxevvs, Tuesday. An official enquiry will be held this morn- , ing in reference to the Taranaki having struck on Stag Reef. The railway line is about to be continued from Balclutha bridge up to the township. The report that Sir Dillon Bell is to have a seat in the Upper House is gaining currency. Auckland, Monday. ': ' In the Supreme Court, William Gibbons, aged 18 years, charged. with, committing an indecent assault, on a girl aged eight years, was found guilty; sentence deferred. Petpr M'Grath, for brutally beating hi3 wife, wias sentenced to three years penal servitude. Eliza Simmons, charged with receiving stolen property, was acquitted. During the proceedings a juryman named Benjamin 'M'Kerrah escaped, and was fined ,£3. The ninth -half-yearly meeting of the South British Insurance Company was held to-day.
