EDUCATION BOARD.
Thursday, AmiL 5. Present : Messrs Barnicoat (chairman), Rout, Wastney, Tarrant, Campbell, Condell, Burn, Catley, Burnett, Holland, Hill, Pattie, Leighton, Shephard, Talbot, Fell, Jackson, Atkinson, Fairhall, Dencker, Malcolm, and the Bishop of Nelson. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was received from the Town Clerk referring to the site of the Haven road School. The report of the Fiuance Committee and Committee of Works was read. Resolved, That the recommendation of the Finance Committee to increase the salary of the present master of the Motupipi School from £80 to £100 per annum from April Ist be adopted. Resolved, That an Assistant Secretary be appointed at fche next meeting of the Board, whose duties shall be as follows:— To be present afc the Board room every day between the hours of 10 and 1, and at every meeting of the Board, and in the absence of the Secretary, afc all meetings of Committees, and generally at any time when he may be required to attend by the Secretary or the Board ; That the salary of the Assistant Secretary be at the rate of £100 per: annum; That applications be publicly invited for those willing to fill tbe office of Assistant Secretary, and that the outline of his duties as defined above be also published. Resolved, That the Secretary be authorised to employ clerical assistance during the current month at a cost of nofc more than £10. Resolved, That the application of the Lower Takaka Committee for a grant of. £35 to defray the cost of and closets be acceded to. Resolved, That the sum of £26 be allowed to ("efray the cost of adding to the master's house at the North Division School, Waimea West. Resolved, That Mr Wendelborn's tender for a twenty-one years' lease of Nos. 33, 34, 35, and 36, Waimea West, be accepted. Letters from the Spring Grove Committee and from the master of Spring Grove School having been read, ifc was resolved, That the Committee bc recommended to accept Mr Edmund's resignation on June 30th, 1877, and that the Secretary inform him that hjs resignation must be sent in to the Spring Grove Committee. Resolved, That the Finance Committee and the Works Committee be united under the name of the Committee of Finance and Works. The Inspector having reported that additional school accommodation was urgently required afc Westport, it was resolved, Tha't the question be referred to the Committee of Finance and Works. Resolved, That MrHoult'a application that his son, the holder o*. a Provincial scholarship, should be permitted to reside outside the College be acceded to. The Inspector having reported that in his opinion there was no immediate necessity for removing the Motupipi School, ifc was resolved that no further action be taken in the matter. An application for a new school afc Upper Dovedale having been read, it was resolved that the numbers given by the applicants were not sufficient to warrant the Board in erecting a school. A memorial from several inhabitants of Pangatotara having been read, proposing that the school s_ould be removed to a site on the laud leased by Mr Saxon, it was resolved, That the memorial with the accompanying plan, be referred to the Pangatotara Committee. Resolved, That the Pangatotara'Committee be requested to see to the clearing out of the mud from the master's house, and to the temporary repairs of the school chimney at a cost of nofc more than £5. Resolved, That the consideration of Mr Simms' application for the reserve afc the Baton be deferred for a month. Resolved, That tenders he invited'for'a lease of the Appleby reserve. Resolved, That the Secretary write to the Minister for Public Works, asking that the free-pass system of travelling on railways may be extended to members of Education Boards when on their way to and froui meetings of the Board, and to the Inspector of Schools wheh travelling iu the service of the Board. Resolved, That the Dovedale Committee be authorised to expend £2 10s on a new window to the cottage building there. NOTICES OF MOTION. 1. Mr Jackson— Thp t £U0 be granted to the Town Committee for miscellaneous expenses. 2. Mr Jackson— That the salary of the assistant teacher of Hampden-street] School be increased. 3. Mr Shephard— That £10 be allowed to the Westport Committee for contingencies. 4. Mr Hill— That £20 be granted to the Spring Grove Committee for fencing, bell, and general repairs. 5. Mr Campbell— That the salaries of Mrs Bryant and Mrs Robinson be increased by £20 per annum each. 7. Mr Tarrant— That collectors of educat'on rates be allowed necessary expenses, not exceeding seven shillings a day, when compelled to appear in a Magistrates' Cqurfc against defaulting ratepavers. 7. Mr Condell— That £5 be allowed to the Stoke Committee to enable them to defray the cost of fencing.
