The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, MARCH 31, 1877.

On Monday, being a public holiday, iua Mail will be published at 10 a.m. An accident that at one time threatened to be very serious, occurred on Thursday evening. Just as the train was set in motion on its return to' Kelson after taking the Volunteers to Kichmoad, a man named Newport attempted to step into it, but miscalculated the puce at which it was going, and slipped down between the last cari'iitge and the first truck. Fortunately Lieut. West was on the platform of the forinetyuul Voluuteer liaiijng on the fore part of the latter, and they simultaneously clutched at the man, ami fortunately seized him by the arms. The atatioa master at the same time laid hold

of his legs and ran alongside the train, holding them up. Some moments elapsed before the alarm could be given to the engine-driver, and meantime the train was increasing ita pace, so that considerably over 100 yards had been traversed before it could be stopped. Newport. may congratulate himself upon his narrow escape, for had he not been so promptly rescued he must assuredly have been either killed or maimed for life.

A rath Kit amusing iucideut occurred last evening- at the launching of the Naval Brigade's boat Aurora. Owing to the tide being very low at the time, the boat got so much way on by the impetus given her by the steep gradient of the landing, that it was impossible to stop her, and the bugler, who was hanging on to her, not letting go in time, was carried half way across the harbor suspended between wind aiid water. For the life of him he could not get on board, but a boat immediately put off from the shore and rescued him from his unpleasant situation, none the worse for his enforced trip. The members of the Fire Brigades will muster at; the Engine house at 11a.m. on Monday and march in procession -to the railway station, whence they will proceed to the Camp at Richmond. They will return to Nelson with the Volunteers in the evening, . when there will be a torchlight-procession." The Customs receipts for the week ending this day wer.e £364 13s lid. Cr Webb spoke strongly in favor of the original resolution. The amendment was then put and lost. The resolution was put with the .-following result:— Ayes 5: The Mayor, Crs Hooper, Gray, Waters, and Webb. Noes 2 : Crs Harley and Pickering. — Mr Orsman's offer of a site for depositing • rubbish and night soil was accepted.— The Mayor said that the Finance Committee desired to hold over their report on the Banking business until next meeting.— The Council then adjourned. ."." - A sermon on behalf of the Nelson School . A cricket match was played yesterday at Motueka between the local club and the Star (Nelson) Club, when the latter proved altogether too good for their opponents, winning the match m one innings with 49 runs to spare. The scores were :— Star Club, first iuniugs 105 ; Motueka, first innings 26, second innings 30. Total, 56. It is notified that on Monday morning between the hours of eleven and one there will be target practice from the camp at Richmond in the direction of the Rabbit Island Mr. T. Chittenden advertises that a quadrille assembly will be held at Mr King's Assembly Rooms on Monday evening. With a loaded pistol at your head you would not trifle with a footpad. Why then trifle with disease which is often as much to be dreaded as the ruffian who demands "your money or your life " with his finger on the trigger. Recollect that a cough is the harbinger of consumption, that a trifling kidney disorder may develop into Bright's Disease, both incurable maladies. Apply the remedy while it is yet time, and remember that Udolpho Wolfe's Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps is the best preventive.— Advt.
