WOOL EXPORTS.
To the Editor of the « Evening Mail.' Sir— Permit me to comment on a part of your leading article yesterday on the production of wool in this group of colonies. Referring to New Zealand you say—" She is now second only to Victoria as a wool-pro-ducing colony," implying that Victoria takes first rank. This is so general an impression, and at the same time one so wide of the truth that it seems worth while to correct it. The fact is that Victoria, instead of producing more wool than New South Wales, only grows about half the quantity. If necessary, I can furnish you with statistical proof that New South Wales now possesses as many sheep as Victoria and New Zealand put together. Victorians, with their uaual bounce, speafc still of their colony as the " premier " one of the group, but a scrutiny of the facts will show that she has lost and is losing ground in comparison with most of the rest. — I am, &c, F. W. Irvine. [We shall be very glad to receive the statistical proofs of which our correspondent speaks. It has frequently been a matter of surprise to us that New South Wales, by far the oldest of the Australian colonies, should be so far behind Victoria in wool production aa she is made to appear in all 1 the trade circulars that have come under our notice.— Ed. JN.E.M.]
