Captain Edwin reports:— "lndications for strong winds any direction from south-east round by east to north, and further fall of glass." The Kennedy sailed for West Coast ports this afternoon. The r Lyttelton left for Blenheim and Wellington this morning. The Wallace arrived from Wanganui on Saturday night, aud sailed this morning for Karamea. The Murray left for Wanganui yesterday afternoon. She reached there this morning and landed passengers and cargo in boats and will sail for Wellington to-night. t Theßingarooma with the Suez mail arrived at the Bluff yesterday and sailed for Port Chalmers the same day. She is expected here ou Thursday, and will return to Melbourne via Southern ports the same day. The'Awaroa will sail for Wanganui this evening. The steamer Result is expected some time this week from Westport to receive new engines and boiler, which are being constructed at the Soho Foundry. The Arawata did not sail until yesterday morning shortly after six, she having lost the previous night's tide in consequence of it not flowing so long as had been expected. Captain Underwood was determined to make up for lost time judging by the pace at which the steamer went down the bank. She arrived at Wellington at. 2-30 p.m., and was to sail shortly afterwards for the South. The Charles Edward arrived alongside the Government VYharf this morning at 43u. She left Nelson on the 6th instant at 3 p.m., and arrived at Westport at 1-30 p.m. next day; discharged cargo, and left again for Hokitika at 5-30 p.m. on the 6th, avriviug there at x - 30 p.m. same day; left for Greymouth f at 4 - I0 p.m. on the 10th, and arrived there at 7' p.m.; sailed for Westport at 7 p.m., arriving there at 5 a.m. yesterday; left for Nelson at 9 a.m., and arrived here as above. Experienced fine weather throughout. The Union Company's s.s. Hawea, Captain Wheeler, came into harbor at 7 # 20 last evening. She left Onehunga wharf at 6 p.m. on Saturday, and arrived off New Plymouth at 4 - 30 yesterday morning; landed passengers and cargo, and, after a stay of three hours, sailed for Nelson, arriving here as above. Fine weather marked the run down. Passed the steamer Rotorua, bound for New Plymouth, this side of Cape Egraont. The Hawea" lias done some tall running on her present trip, having made the passage from New Plymouth to Nelson in 11 hours 40 minutes, and this under steam alone, totally eclipsing her previous performances. She also made the run from Ouehunga to Taranaki in 10£ hours. The Hawea is now in splendid, condition, and these smart runs prove "conclusively the immense power of this boat. She will sail for South this afternoon at 5 o'clock. A most exciting race took place on Saturday evening between the steamers Hawea and Hinemoa, which resulted in the colonial yacht throwing down her laurels to the coasting steamer. Both vessels were lying alongside the Onehunga wharf together, the Hinemoa being outside. The Hinemoa cast off shortly before six, and was nearly a mile away when the Ilawea started. The latter immediately opened out, aud the dense volumes of smoke which issued from the smoke stacks of the two steamers indicated that the stokers were not idle below. The Hawea slowly and surely gained on her opponent, and when the Heads were reached, a distance of about eighteen miles, the two steamers were close alongside of each other. After crossing the bar the Hineinoa stood out to sea, and at midnight could not be seen from the deck of the Hawea.. The Hinemoa was foul on the bottom at the time, and is not in such good fettle at present as the Hawea, the former having been hard run lately.*; The Hineinoa was thought to be second only to the Ringarooma and Arawata in the colonies, but the result of the race on Saturday has dispelled any apprehension that may have been felt on that point.
