The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, MARCH 1, 1877.

The prize firing, our telegrams inform us,' is to conclude to-day, aud the prizes are to he presented at Hokitika on Saturday. The Hinemoa, with the representatives', is to arrive here on Monday, but the precise time i-. not kuown, probably it will be in the afternoon There appeals lo be a very general desire that a fitting reception should be given to Lieutenaut Paynter, who has so distinguished himself at the colonial Wimbledun, having won not only the Champion Belt but the Challenge Cup in the North and South Island M«. ch, in which at 2uo, 500, and 600 yards he made the splendid score of 72 out of a possible 84. The arrival of the liiuemoa early in the afternoon would to some extent affect the demonstration by which the Champion will be greeted, but as she would be sigrjalled between two and three hours before entering the harbor ample notice could be given, and such of the volunteers as are engaged in places of business

would probably on an occasion of this kind be able to obtain leave for the short time that they woul t bj required to be ab.enfc. We regret to learn that Mr Malpas, of Ngatimoti, who was a severe sufferer by the flood, sustained another heavy loss on Monday, when his house and the whole of its contents were destroyed by fire. The origin of the fire is not known. Although there is reason to fear that the number of exhibits will be lessened by the bad weather that prevailed three weeks ago, the show ,on the whole is likely to prove successful, and to include some splendid specimens of fruit. We understand that the General Government have consented to grant the use of the tents, now erected at Hokitika for the rifle competitors, for the Easter Encampment, which will be held in the .vicinity of Richmond this year. At the annual meeting of the members of the Nelson Caledoniau Society recently held, the following resolution was unanimously agreed to:— -"That the members of the Caledonian Society of Nelson desire to put on record their deep sense of the loss this Society has sustained through the lamented death of the late Sir David Monro, who for so many years nnd so efficiently presided over its affair. ; .hut they also desire to express their sincere sympathy with Lady Monro and family in their sad bereavement; and that the Hon Dr Renwiek, the Hou Major Richmond, and Mr Mackay be appointed to communicate this resolution to Lady Monro." In accordance with the above the three gentlemen named waited yesterday upon Lady Monro, and presented her with a copv of the resolution. Messrs. Sharp and Pickering advertise a sale of live stock of various descriptions at Richmond to-morrow afternoon. The churchwardens of All Saints notify that they will be in attendance at the vestry this evening for the purpose of receiving the pew rents. At the meeting of the Waimea County Council, which had not concluded when we went to press yesterday, Mr Macmahon's resolution for the apportionment of the subsidy was carried. A memorial from Suburban North, asking for assistance towards making certain reclamation works, was presented by Mr Wells. The Council regretted having no funds at its disposal, it was resolved to apply to the Geueral Government for au advance to meet current expenses, and to pay the expenses of members at the rate of one shilling per mile one way. A motion by Mr Macmahou to give another member to the Itiwaka Riding was lost. The following resolutions were agreed to on the motion of Mr 0 liver : — 1 . "Tbat the Chairman of the Council be requested to communicate to the Ministry the great devastation to property and destruction to the roads and bridges iu this county, caused by the unprecedented rising of the Motueka and its "tributaries, more especially of the Orinoco, Baton, Dove, and Stanley Brook, ou the 6th and 7th February; and (seeing that the funds at command of tlie County and Road Boards are entirely inadequate to deal with a disaster of such magnitude), to respectfully urge upon the General Government the public advantage and necessity of a Colonial grant for the twofold purpose of affording aid to the Road Boards and employment to the sufferers by the inundation." 2. "Iu view of the late disastrous floods in the Motueka river and its tributaries, and the wide spread ruin and destruction caused thereby, that the Chairmau of this Council do urge respectfully upon the Minister of Public Works the great public advantage iu the emergency of proceeding with the least possible delay with such public works, already authorised by his Excellency the Governor, as are located within the injured districts, viz.:— Thirty-four miles of the main road from Nelson to Westport, from a portion of the grant of £30,0n0; road from Pigeon Valley to Stanley Brook, £8000; Motueka bridge, £7000." 3. "That the several Road Boards in the County be requested to f-jrnish a detailed statement of the extraordinary damage that has accrued to the roads within the respective Highway Districts in consequence of the late floods, together with a careful estimate of the cost of repairing the same." The Council then adjourned until the 28th of March
