The Home News contains a flattering notice of "Old New Zealand," and says tbe preface is by that smart and flippant nobleman, Lord Pembroke. The Home Neios says that Sir James Fergusson'a defeat at Frome was decidedly disappointing, not because he was a conservative, but because he is a distinguished man, whereas Samuelson, his opponent, is a nonentity. The causes of Fereusson'a non-election are eb follows:— -The present conservative administration is not quite as strpog as it was before "the Bulgarian atrocities," which have been bread and cheese to the liberals; Samuelson lives not very far from Frome and has nursed tbe voters carefully, while Fergusson lives thirty miles away and was too late in addressing the electors. There is a theory, which is however denied, that the high church party, which is a political power in the little world of Frome, voted for the liberal candidate. G. consequence of this was that every Conservative who was caught with or without arms was cut down,, houses were sacked, all residents shot down, furniture destroyed, and all other kinds of outrages committed. All storerooms and warehouses of merchandise were sacked, and foreigners shared the same fate as tha natives. It is reported tbat the number killed reached 300, including women and children.
